Default Please Please help-relocating to Salem

Hello all,

I hope someone can help me. I just got a job with Lewis-Gale hospital and will be starting in few weeks. I am looking for a safe place to live at for a professional female. I heard that many places get flooded and others are very noisy with lots of kids around.

Even Sunscape I heard that the walls are paper thin and one can hear the neighbor rolling the tissue paper in the bathrooms.

Does anyone know about Salemwood, Salem Ridge or Chateau Riviera Apartments? Any other recommendations for a quite and safe apartment complex?

My husband and I lived at Sunscape for a while before our house closing. It was really nice! I think it's the nicest apartment complex around. I also know some people who live at Honeywood (unsure of name??) Apartments on Ogden Rd. (near Sunscape). It's a nice place and a lot of young Carilion doctors live there.

I don't think you could go wrong with either of those. I'm not familiar with any others in Salem.

Best of luck! Welcome and congratulations on the new job!

Personally I prefer privately owned apartments, usually the landlords are easier to work with and the rent tends to be a little cheaper not to mention you get a little more personable service and have to deal with a lot less neighbors (8 people live in the building). Not sure if it's what your looking for but an apartment is avail. in my buidling right now in South Roanoke City.. If youd like I can give you more information on it. Just PM if your interested if not I won't bother you with it. Ps. No kids live in the building it seems the landlord likes to keep this building anti-kid hehe. Also a tid bit on Salem Ridge.. they were on the news not too long ago, the tenants were complaining of health violations and flooding problems, I hear they cleaned it up and its under new ownership BUT the potential to flood again is always there I would steer clear of that particular location. Also my good friend lived in The Summit, she liked it but there werent enough other kids around to play with her daughter so she moved to Copper Croft. The Summit may be good for you because like I said there arnt many kids around. Good Luck!

Since I am new to this forum, I don't know how to do cool stuff with writing replies and stuff like that. So here I go, Erin: Thanks for your reply and your post was helpful.
Teebyrd: Thanks for your ideas. Sounds cool- not sure if I want to look outside of Salem yet. I am very much interested in Chateau Riviera. If anyone has info about how safe and quite the place is, I would really appreciate it.

Salem Ridge has been notoriously crappy in the past, but recently came under new ownership and has been remodled. It is in the flood plane however.

I had a friend who lived in Salem Wood and it was probably one of the nicer apartment complexes in Salem. Very much a cookie-cutter type of apartment though.

I agree with some of the other folks - look around for a privately owned rental.

You may also look at places further up Electric Road such as The Pines (more cookie cutter apts but decent).

For a whole listing of cookie cutter apts check out A Guide to Apartments - SW Virginia's Online Apartment Guide

Salems offerings are limited and you get a lot more choices in the Roanoke area. I would definatly think about expanding your options into Roanoke. The valley is a small area so you would still be close to your job. All points of Roanoke city/county are within 15 min. to the edge of Salem where Lewis Gale is located. You seem young and Roanoke city offers great neighborhoods for single young people (old southwest, south roanoke, grandin). Salem is more for families and to me lacks something I am not really sure it just didnt appeal to me in the least. But of course that is my personal opinion and that is a biased one because I absolutly love everything about Roanoke and the neighborhood I live in. Again I would definatly think about expanding your options and begin looking around Roanoke too.

Any knowledge about Chateau Riviera Apartments?
Work hours are crazy so I don't want to commute that far. During my days off, I will explore the city and all the fun activities that are there for me to do. I have a car so it's not a big deal for me to go and hang out where everyone else hangs
BTW, all of your comments are very helpful to give me an idea about the type of people that I will be surrounded by and so far, I am loving it Thanks to all!

Hi -
Yeah boy - I do know all about Chateau. My mom lives there (for 30 years) and I lived there for a few years. It is a great place. There are many retired folks and some families. Location is, of course, ideal. You will soon discover the "back roads" to downtown, Grandin village, and other entertainment spots. In this area you are never terribly far from entertainment and restaurants etc.
The apts are well kept and the staff friendly and communicate well. Most of all it's safe and the layouts are nice. No one ever uses the tennis courts - but you could. Nice small pools. All in all a really good choice.
Welcome!!!!

You guys and gals have been great. I feel so welcomed already!!!
I finally found my spot in the world and I am taking it. I must say though after visiting the Chateau myself, it is really meant and designed for older people. I just couldn't see myself living there. So I got another place.
Thanks again for all of your comments. They helped A LOT
