I was born in lynchburg in 87', lived here until 95' (moved to Newark DE)...came back in 98'. I then moved to Spartanburg SC in 2000, came back in 2001. There is my introduction, so on the the Lynchburg facts. This city is really what you make it. Most of the residents choose to stay inside, go out to eat and spend time at Lowes and Walmart. You have business oriented individuals who live like people i know from up north, fast paced lifestyles or whatnot. The "ghetto" that many people tend to speak about isn't a ghetto at all. It is actually neighborhoods of less fortunate individuals who make a living the best way they can. They do what they have to do to survive. This city has "big-city qualities" and "small town comfort". Also racist cops, and idiot leaders downtown. A city with so much potential would blossom with the right leadership and more opportunities for the youth.

Does anyone think the downtown revitalization is worth the money? When we have young adults to the middle aged with nothing to do besides go to Wal-mart, eat at a variety of restaurants, and stay at home...Why can't we have clubs, better bars, a nightlife, and AQUARIUM..lol..something.......somebody give some input

For bars to survive you need a good-sized population of people 21-30 who are single and have some $$$ tp spend. Lynchburg has relatively few of these and the greatest population of college students are not supposed to drink. There are some good semi-underground places where the younger crowd can hangout and drink. My fave is the Bull Branch. Buy most young folks are married and that ends the night life pretty quickly.
Restaurants are coming along and for its size I think L is fine. For a small southern city to have a good number of ethnic and fine dining choices means I never missed anything in that regard versus much larger cities where I have lived.
The downtown area needs to find a niche and I think it is slowly doing that. There is more downtown good quality housing, more restaurants and s smattering of museums and such. What it needs is a creative retail segment to take over the dark storefronts but that is very tough in a town with a lower average income, lots of larger families, and a somewhat conservative image. There is a trickle of artists and other creative types moving in due to the good location, colleges, and low COL. If we can combine that with some higher income retired folks from other areas (which are coming in larger numbers) the area could move over that hump.

So my summary is that L is moving in the right direction compared to many other smaller southern cities, has a solid economic base, a solid base of colleges, and a growing retirement sector which could be a real boon to the town.

Never really liked the bar scene-- to each his own though. An Aquarium would be nice. Does Lynchburg offer Big City entertainment for small kids? Like the 'Wiggles' and kid-friendly shows? I have a 3 yr old son and a 4 yr old daughter. I personally like Dinner Theatres.

Amazement Square is the best they have. For slightly older kids you have professional baseball and some good college sports. Some nice parks and bike trails. There also is a dinner/children's theater group and many local college productions.

Amazement Square - The Rightmire Children's Museum, Lynchburg, Virginia.

Welcome

lol @ churches every square mile...but i just don't understand it..the city doesn't lack a young populations, there are plenty 18-24 year olds..and i'm sure the older folks like a good time too lol...but seriously let the super-religious folk have their churches, and let the ones looking for entertainment have their spots as well...talk about revenue, it would sky rocket!! i went by the texas inn at around 10pm one friday night, and there was a line out to the upper parking lot!! it is simply ridiculous....and it was the same scenario at many other restaurants..almost like the leaders just want residents to eat sleep pray and go to walmart lol

By accident I found that a big crowd can be found at the club in the Kirkley Hotel on Friday nights. I just happened to be staying there and saw all these people coming in around 8pm. The desk clerk said it's that way every Friday night. Cattle Annies and nearby Tropical place seem to be real busy too. Those are some I know about.

You got it! Plus there are a lot of decent companies in the area that 'may' have a hard time recruiting and retaining good young professionals that are unmarried and want a life outside of work.

At least a hooter! C'mon, one little hooters!
