Default Rocky Mount, VA

Hey folks,

I'm trying to gather information about Rocky Mount, VA. I currently live in western Kentucky. There is a job offer there, however...I see that the population is less than 5000. I'm single, would be very far from family. How is community life? Would I find myself lonely with very little to do, or are there events going on closer to Roanoke? How well do singles fare in the Rocky Mount area. I'm not interested in bar scenes, just how open the community is to newcomers.

Any help at all would be appreciated!!

I'd say that depends how old you are and what age ranges you prefer to be around. I've only been here for a couple months. I'm in my mid twenties and have found Roanoke to be a good spot for meeting people my age.

late 40's. I don't have to live in a large city, but the community openness is very important. For example, community events that are free or low cost, and people are just open to meeting and inviting newcomers into their lives.

You could do just fine in Rocky Mount, and you're just about 30 minutes to Roanoke, and 15 minutes to Smith Mountain Lake. There is a nice cafe in Rocky Mount's little downtown, a nice modern library, a farmer's market and so on. Check out the Franklin News Post online:

The Franklin News Post - News from Rocky Mount, Virginia

From there you might get a better sense of community events and so on. Rocky Mount's pop is 5,000 but it's the county seat for Franklin County, pop 51,000 so it feels larger. It has retail to support the county (Super Walmart, Lowes, multiple grocery stores, etc).

I'd say, pound for pound, Rocky Mount has alot more going on then your average town with 5,000 people. But it's still a small town so keep that in mind.
