I agree Roanoke is definately an "Asheville" sort of place. I would also suggest to newcomers to not limit their view of the Roanoke region to just Roanoke. The area is rather compact from Blacksburg to Lynchburg and Smith Mountain Lake. For someone to generalize and say there is nothing to do here is rather myopic. We are still not on the radar screen of major employers, tourists and would be retirees from the northeast. Virginia does nothing to promote this region and the local governments(excluding Roanoke City)do very little to encourage newcomers. Some may argue that the status quo is what makes this beautiful area unique.

I agree about the "lack of" spectator activities and am glad for it. Society's mantra today is "entertain me." Let's go sit at a concert and be entertained. Let's go to a bar and be entertained. How about strapping on a backpack and seeing what's out there? Like Ed Abbey said, "So get out there and mess around with your friends, ramble out yonder and explore the forests, encounter the grizz, climb the mountains. Run the rivers, breathe deep of that sweet yet lucid air, sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, that lovely, mysterious, and awesome space."

Have you read City magazine? There are plenty of activities for young folks. Perhaps you might consider getting involved with various organizations - a great way to meet people of like interests. Try Metro on a Saturday night - upstairs they have a dj and lots of young professionals. My brother and his family moved back home and live in Raleigh Court. No problem finding new "friends". Join a gym - there are lots of friendly people at the YMCA. If you are shy and not the "I've never met a stranger" type - then I strongly suggest a charity/organization to ease you into socializing. I know it's different than college where you run with a pack, or just "go" to this or that - but I'll bet you didn't know alot of people when you first arrived at school. You'll be fine - just get out there. I've lived here most of my life and the one thing about this fantastic area is friendly welcoming people - ONCE you meet them. Big Lick welcome - I hope you find you niche, and enjoy life here!!!!

My husband and I are moving to Roanoke at the end of June from Erie, PA. We have a yellow lab and are looking for clean, well-maintained apartment communities near a greenway (trails to run, bike, walk on) and close to conveniences. Does anyone have suggestions?

Also, we're both 28 and are looking for young professional groups to join and the local Browns Backers club. Does anyone have any further information on anything like that?

THANK YOU!
Kate

The greenways seem to be developing nicely mostly in the southwest part of the City. The most popular area is around the Carilion Hospital/Wiley Drive area. There are a lot of young professionals who live in that general area and they have a short walk to the greenways & conveniences. Downtown is also closeby with access by walking or a short trolley ride. I wouldn't limit myself to apartment complexes as the better ones are generally in the County which is not as trendy and have few advantages for walking/biking. Greenways are sprouting up all over the valley. Depending on your income I think you could find somewhere to live closeby by contacting a realtor. Others may have better suggestions on where to live here or apartment complexes in the City.

Thanks for the info!

We definitely aren't limiting ourselves to the apartment complexes, I just figured it'd be a start and the most probable for being near such things, however, you've shed a little more light on the subject.

We've heard good things about Raleigh Court and Grandin areas, too.

We're hoping to head down there to try and find a place to live next weekend before we move down on June 29th...hoping someone will let us in before July 1st (my husband's first day of work at Norfolk Southern in IT)!!

Cheers,
Kate

PS - What's the story with microbreweries down there - my husband and I started a site here in Erie called Eriebrewed.com and would like to continue a similar hobby down in VA.

I remember a microbrewery in downtown Roanoke on the Market Square a few years ago but it never made a splash. I never went there and unfortunately they did no advertising. I have seen some in NC and it would seem to me there is potential here as we are becoming more of a tourism area.

Default Meetup.com

You will have to put some effort into trying to connect with people here than you did in bigger cities. Apartments/communities do have events for their residents so you can connect with your neighbors through such events. Also try meetup.com to search for any activity groups like hiking, book club, sports, etc. Vtech at blacksburg has plenty of events. There are also groups for professionals that meet often to promote their line of business. Try LinkedIn to find such groups. You will have to try different ways to connect with people through your hobbies & work interests. The good thing is its a small community & people are very friendly & welcoming.
