Question Will Ice Hockey work this time in Roanoke?

There is talk of an Ice Hockey team returning to The Roanoke Civic Center in the near future.

Here is the story from News 7 website:

The Atlantic Coast Conference Hockey Tournament is back in Roanoke and fans couldn't be happier.

This is the second year the Roanoke Civic Center has hosted the three day tournament. Last year, only 2,000 fans showed up so this year's goal was to bring in more.

Ticket prices were cut back to try and get more people out to the games.

"The civic center has cooperated with the ACCHL in a wonderful way this year," said Donald Martin, the ACC Hockey Commissioner.

Virginia Tech plays their home games at the civic center and attendance there is strong. Coupled with the ACC tournament and some are wondering if it's time to bring back professional hockey.

The new head of the of the civic center, Chris Connolly, says maybe.

"Our company is presently exploring some options and different opportunities and different leagues and different teams so I would say definitely there is potential."

Fan support is a must though, something Roanokers need to realize.

"Roanoke is a tough city. They don't support much. We had professional basketball and they didn't support that so Roanoke is a tough sell," said hockey fan Art Weeks.

So until hockey comes back full-time, fans will have to settle for tournaments like the one this weekend.

It runs until Sunday and an all day ticket is $8 for adults, $5 for kids.

So what is your take on this?

I agree with 540_804. Unfortunately.

I worked in the civic center business for a while and there are ALWAYS rumors and inquiries about teams coming and going. So without some firm news to go on, I don't think there's anything to this.
