New "young" grandma considers moving to Rocky Mount. Suggestions??
My daughter has one year left at Ferrum before she graduates. It was my plan that she only get a college degree, but she surprised me with a grandson who will be in NICU for another couple of months. I am seriously thinking of moving to Franklin County/Rocky Mount and helping her and the child's father with the baby if I can swing it financially. It would be nice to find a job in the public school system, too, doing what I really like doing--working as a 7th grade Special Education teacher's aide. Would somebody give me some advice on where I might find an affordable place that would be safe and where I could also have a little social life, too??

I don't know much about Rocky Mount. But I wanted to let you know that my thoughts and prayers are with your grandson. The NICU is a scary place. Those babies look so small and so strong all at the same time.
The folks on this forum will give you helpful hints and advice. They're a good group.

I don't know anything about Rocky Mount either, but wanted to let you know that my thoughts and prayers are with you too. Our oldest, who recently turned 13, spent a week in NICU when he was born. Those nurses are very dedicated and compassionate. Just keep visiting him, talking and singing to him, and holding/touching him if they allow it.

I know that the user J1N used to rent in Rocky Mount before moving his family into Roanoke. He will have helpful information for you and he usually checks in here every couple of days.
One place to look into for work would be the Gereau Center, which is affiliated with the Franklin County public school system.
The Ferrum area is a beautiful rural setting. Rocky Mount is a small town, but it's got alot going for it that small towns usually can't offer, because it is the seat of a county with a 51,000+ population, not to mention Smith Mountain Lake, etc.

Check into the Knob Apts in Rocky Mount. They are managed by F&W Management. (Stay AWAY from Candlewood, F&W's other apt complex in Rocky Mount!) There's also a nice (looked nice, anyway) apt complex beside the high school...up behind the "mini-mall" that Hardees shares a parking lot with. It seemed like it might be some older folks...apartment balconies with plants, etc, if I remember right.

Roanokers are very thoughtful people. Just one of the reasons I love it here. Best wishes to you and your family. Hope everything works out for the best.
