Discount shopping, Roanoke and Salem
My son is a rising Senior at Roanoke College in Salem. I think they will furnish the house with things from second hand stores, dumpster diving and yard sales. All of us parents live at least one or two states away so we're not too involved with that. Any specific suggestions for places to go for new things like mattresses and rugs that won't cost an arm and a leg?
Son is home for a few days before going back for the May term and the summer and I took him to a discount hit or miss store that I frequent up here for grocery items. I like it because it's clean but has stuff pretty cheap. He mentioned that he wished he knew of a place like that near him. Is there a place like that near the College or in Roanoke?

I moved here into my first place bringing little to nothing with me, I was able to get a few things from craigslist including my couch. I also shoped at walmart a lot and believe it or not bed bath and beyond (if you shop their clearence stuff you can find some bargains!). The closest thing that comes to mind matching what you are looking for would be Big Lots. I know there are several in Roanoke, possibly one in Salem as well. good luck!!

There is a Big Lots on the main drag in Salem. I prefer it over the ones in Roanoke.

I don't have a store to suggest, but maybe The Valley Trading Post would help him track down some of life's little necessities.
Here's a Roanoke Times story on the publication: Trading Post Hangs Tough. One quote from the story:
The Valley Trading Post, that venerable publication stuffed with classified ads from folks wanting to sell their used bedroom suites, love seats, laptop computers, Martin guitars or (fill in blank here with an item from 70 other categories), is still a news rack staple after 36 years.

Thanks for those suggestions. I'll mention Big Lots and the Trading Post to my son. Anyone else have a place for real deals?

Yard Sales!!!! ...especially in the coming months. I know in my neighborhood (north roanoke county) yard sales are a big deal and happen just about every Saturday during the summer.
Im not one to typically shop at yard sales (just personal preference) but the couple of times I've gone I've found some really good deals....specifically a very nice large leather reclining chair with back massager...as well as a very nice L-shaped wooden office set..
But...as mentioned above...definitely check out Big Lots
For other smaller furniture pieces (rugs, end tables, lamps, pillows, wall art, decorative items, etc) stores like Marshalls, TJ Maxx, and Ross are pretty good and have decent prices...

Tell them to go to Happys flea market on saturday......
It's out on williamson, and I believe there are a few good used furniture stores as well. The rescue mission off f elm ave in roanoke city, also has some great deals from time to time. Good will in salem, the big lots in salem, Try the yard sales on sat mornings...or all else failing, Craigslist..lol Just tell em to watch out for bedbugs and roaches that hide away in second hand items. Not all second hand stuff has bugs, but many do.

Excellent suggestions! Yard Sales are definitely on their radar screen - getting up early to get the good stuff may be a problem. Son grew up going to yard sales, but I had to stop after they grew out of toys, guess it's time for him to re-visit. This time he can drive!
