I heard all the recycle bins in Cave Spring fell over during the Earth Quake!

It's funny, but as a Vermonter transplanted into Roanoke since 2005, I'm still having trouble getting over how bass ackwards the recycling system is in this area. Even in the boonies of Vermont, recycling was "state of the art". You didn't have to sort your recycling; just one giant bin where virtually every type of cardboard, metal, plastic and glass was accepted and pickup was available at your home. This recycling would be shipped to an automated sorting facility for routing to the appropriate market. Glass is the ultimate recyclable material; you can recycle it perpetually. Yet most of it gets dumped into the landfill here. Plastic has at best just a few life cycles.

The Cycle Systems location was a little hard to find - it is on Broadway but I had not seen this section of Broadway before. The best way to find it - it is exactly across Wonju from the new Walgreens (adjacent to Ukrops).

They do accept clear glass - they also take non-aluminum metal cans, newspaper, mixed paper, office paper, cardboard, #1 and #2 plastic.

No color glass - but other than that a pretty good one-stop place.

You can then stop by Ukrops and say HI to Teebyrd! (I have been looking for you Teebyrd - where do we find you??)

And do you have to be a City resident to take glass there? I'm in Botetourt County....

Just looked up Cycle Systems, thanks for the tip! Nope, you don't have to be a resident of Roanoke to go to Cycle Systems. Their web site states that their Roanoke recycle station accepts:

* Newspaper
* Mixed paper
* Office paper
* Cardboard
* Metal cans
* Aluminum cans
* Clear glass
* Plastic containers

So, I wonder if they accept _all_ plastic containers or just #1 and #2? Probably half of our plastic is #5 (yogurt containers etc). Now that we're getting settled in to our new place, it's time to set up a recycling bin station in the garage

I found it (Cycle) last week - I'm pretty sure it was only #1 and #2 as far as plastics.

It was self serve and you did not need any proof of address or anything.

Teebyrd works in the produce section at Ukrops.

Thanks for the tips on the glass!! We have quite the stash laying around in the garage.

I've taken my recycling there when I am on my way to Ukrops, where I have met Teebyrd in the produce section! I also have taken recycling to Cave Springs Middle School, as I drive by there quite frequently. So Sean, you have moved already? What part of town are you in now?

We're in Hunting Hills, where, I'm ashamed to say, I like living in much more than I thought I would. It's very convenient, and nicely wooded, and the neighbors are all a pretty interesting and varied bunch. The golf course is pretty awesome in the early evening; it's deserted and turns into a beautiful place for family walks. I was installing invisible pet fence this weekend and was surrounded by wildlife, including a screech owl that flew down to within 10' of me and watched me while I worked. It's not a farm but it will do for the next 10 years or so
