Lol at the light green map. Appomattox Co? Seriously?

Just to jump in on the Lynchburg discussion. Economically speaking, it is much more connected to SW Virginia. Botetourt County, technically in the Lynchburg MSA, has commuting patterns split between Lburg and Roanoke at around 8000 going each way. Also, Roanoke and Lynchburg share the same TV and Radio media area.
Furthermore, both areas share a strong industry cluster together.

I thought thr Lynchburg MSA only included Amherst, Appomattox, Campbell and Bedford. But I do agree that both of the metros have strong economic ties.

I think the previous poster misspoke and probably meant Bedford County, not Botetourt, as being the place that splits its population between Lynchburg and Roanoke. BedCo is smack-dab in the middle of the two cities, while BotCo's nearest edge is 45 or so miles from Lynchburg.

Long-timer here and I would say Roanoke is definitely not part of the Shenandoah Valley geologically (it's two river basins away) or culturally. No one north of Buchanan on 81 really looks to Roanoke for anything.
And I would definitely say it is southwest Virginia. Is Bristol more southwest? Sure. But there is a lot that draws people from "far southwest" and points east to Roanoke simply because Roanoke is the nearest city of any size--medical care, shopping, transportation, certain goods and services, and so on.
And no one east of Bedford really needs Roanoke for anything, either. There's Lynchburg, and any further east and you're not far from Richmond.
