Default somewhere to take my dog swimming

Another post on here gave me an idea and I didn't want to hijack that one. But, where can I take my dog swimming? Are dogs allowed at smith mountain lake? Any other good lakes or slow moving rivers?

We were just back at Garst Greek park again today and brought the dogs. Thanks to the rains the level is high enough to be swim-able in parts for the dogs and they had a good time. There were a couple of other families with dogs that were doing the same. Not sure it's what you have in mind but it's an option.

Another place I used to drive by regularly is right off 220S. Coming from Roanoke head down to Boones Mill and just before the town on the right is a turn-off that brings you down to Maggodee Creek, which can be a pretty bold creek in rainy weather.
