Default Where in Roanoke for retirees

My husband and I fell in love with Roanoke years ago and have always dreamed of moving there when the kids were grown up...well, that is just around the corner so we've been scanning the area for jobs opps and housing and found some absolutely perfect, VERY affordable (compared to NY) housing in the city. But before we get too excited I guess we should calculate where the better places are to settle...any help would be appreciated.

If you can provide streets where some of those houses are located then I can help. Are you planning on living within city limits? I ask because the city itself is quite small compared to the land area of Roanoke County, and surrounding counties.

I just got in a packet of maps and information for the region today. Like you, we are in the same boat being our youngest is 20 and in college and we are looking for a scenic and affordable area to settle down in. Vermont despite being beautiful is financially oppressive. I notice you mention NY, I originally hail from NYC and of course it will remain a place to visit but never to consider retiring to. Good luck in finding results in Va.
