The Peaks of Otter is my absolute favorite stomping grounds in the area. The mountains have great hiking, and the lodge offers some yummy food a the perfect place to wind down.

Not that other spots on your list aren't good, but the Peaks are something I wouldn't miss.

So far...I would include heading up to the Star too, but just in the car on the way out of town.

When TheJoe leaves Lynchburg I can try and create a list of things to do or see before the big day comes, but, I don't think the list will get very far past #1. So what's the point?

Just hop in the ole cadillac and exit stage left without looking back!!

I think it's just too stinking hot and humid this time of year to do much hiking. I recently had family in town for a week and we headed out to The Greenbrier Resort (white sulphur springs, WV) www.greenbrier.com and did the bunker tour there. It was awesome!! It was only about an hour from Roanoke and easy to find.

We also toured Jefferson's Monticello in Charlottesville and that was great too! About 2 hours from Roanoke.

The wineries are great on a hot day too! My favorite is Chateau Morrissette in Floyd (nice Sunday brunch). Also love Blue Ridge Vineyards (pretty location) in Botetourt County. Never been to Valhalla but my husband has.

Don't forget to eat at The Homeplace if you haven't yet!

Certainly true for some people. All the more reason to pick the Peaks of Otter if you want to cross at least one outdoor activity off your list. There is a shuttle that'll take you about 3/4ths of the way up Sharp Top, and from there the hike is easy. You get the amazing views at the peak without too many aches and pains!

I would fish for smallies in the New River on the Ripplemead to Bluff City section, go to Crabtree Falls in Nelson County, and hike Rock Castle Gorge off the Parkway in Floyd County.

Peaks down. Beautiful, thanks for the recommendations. We hiked for a bit, saw deer right in front of us. I think the next one will be some fishing. Any suggestions on good spots? Where can I get a 1 day fishing license from?
