Default Roanoke Area-Good & Not So Good Area?

Roanoke area is a place we are considering for relocation/semi-retirement. What areas should we stay away from & what areas are considered desireable areas to look for a home. Any thoughts, suggestions, feedback would be greatly appreciated. We live in upstate New York right now. Thanks.

I think that, generally, the 24018 zip code is probably thought of as the most desirable area code. But there are other desirable spots too...Grandin Village and Raleigh Court (zip code 24015). There aren't really any "terrible" parts of Roanoke. Certainly not compared to other cities of it's size.

Are you looking at Roanoke City or Roanoke County?

I think J1N has a good fact about the 24018 zip code which encompasses the SW Roanoke County area, the main thing it has going for it is the school system which likely isnt a huge concern for you. I would also check out the Bonsack area someone I know lives in a neighborhood behind the Walmart and loves it, he says many of his neighbors were relocated here and he and his family seems to really enjoy it. I agree there arnt too many bad parts of Roanoke but I would stay away from the NW and SE city areas as well as parts of Old Southwest heading towards SW city. That said Roanoke city has Grandin and Raliegh Courts, South Roanoke, and parts of Old South West that are wonderful. It really depends on what kind of enviornment your family wants, suburban or urban? There are also many rural counties surrounding the area, many retirees head out to Franklin or Bedford Counties to be near SML (Smith Mountain Lake). Roanoke has A LOT to offer.

We are looking in the general region so it would be Roanoke County

Thanks for the info. We probably are looking more on the outskirts/areas around Roanoke.

The more upscale neighborhoods are definitely located in S.W. Roanoke County. Some of the outlying counties, such as Botertout and Bedford have some nice areas. I also would not rule out the city of Salem, which connects with Roanoke County
