Parking for higher education center? (Roanoke: safe, car, park)

I was wondering if anyone knows if there is any free parking that is within a safe distance to the Roanoke Higher Education Center? I am taking classes there, but they don't let out until after dark. I'm not really crazy about paying to park every time, but I do want to be close enough to feel safe walking to my car at night. I'm not terribly familiar with that area yet, so if you have any suggestions, maybe you could include details about the location. Thank you!

There should be parking in the back of the building - off of Wells Street - if I remember, well lighted parking lot for that building since lots of courses are offered there at night.

Thank you! At my last class, I did park on the street...not sure if we were supposed to, but others did so I took my chances. I think I'll keep trying with the hopes that my car doesn't get towed! : )

Be careful - the meter maids downtown LOVE to ticket!!

For what it's worth, when parking in the Market area (especially the parking along Wall St. for example), do not have your tires or bumper touching or over the sidewalk, you'll get ticketed for that! (friend of mine did, not me).
