Looking for Ice hockey near Blacksburg VA (Roanoke, Lynchburg: homes, school)

I am from the New England area and am relocating to Blacksburg VA in a few weeks for work. One of the things I am looking for are arenas to play ice hockey at. I heard there is a rink in Roanoake, but the web page is vague as to if there is open ice time there.

Can anyone tell me, or point me into the direction where I can get information on rinks in the area? I know I am not in NH anymore, so expectations for finding a close rink are low.

Hello Dangles,

I won't be a lot of help, but I know there is ice at the Roanoke Civic Center. I've seen signs around town for youth ice hockey. I believe that VT's club team plays their games at the RCC. I have no idea what the schedule might be, as the ice is not up all year round, they take it down for the summer, and not sure when it goes back in.

My son plays college hockey at a D3 school in New England, we moved here in March, and when he was home for the summer he could not find any place to skate or play pick up hockey except for Liberty University has an ice rink in Lynchburg. He didn't want to make the drive to Liberty.

If I find out more, I will post.

thanks for the information. glad to know i'll get some skating in and not have to retire - not that I ever had a career to begin with.

I relocated from Massachuestts as well and found plenty of hockey. Right now the A & B leagues are playing at the RCC and I know the Rusty Blades are playing there as well. There's also hockey up in Lynchburg year round, but the ride up 460 gets old. I belive most of the leagues start their winter schedules after the holidays so you might have luck playing in the B league which would equates to a C leagu up North. The A league looks pretty good, but it's loaded with youngsters and those years are long behind me.
