Default Best camping with a 2 hour drive

Where is the best camping around here. Here's what I'm looking for:

-secluded, but safe
-good hiking in the area
-dogs allowed
-permitted to have your own fire at your site

and most importantly:
-would LOVE a campsite with direct river, stream, or lake access right in front of my tent for some fishing.

Any thoughts??

Wow, what a great question because there are tons of great options out here.

Douthat State Park is super. Another good one is Sherando Lake in the Waynesboro area. Mount Rogers National Rec Area and Grayson Highlands State Park are unbelievable. And Fairystone State Park and the entire Corps of Engineers camping system at Philpott Reservoir is super kewl. Add to this list Lake Moomaw as well. This list literally goes on forever out here and the time to go is now when the crowds are low and the colors are starting to turn. Have fun!!!!

Thanks for the reply. I actually ended up reserving a spot at James River state park. They have 13 primitive campsites directly on the river at Canoe Landing. Sounds pretty cool. We will be fishing from our beach chairs next to the firepit this weekend. ahhhhhhhhh cant wait

Another neat option is a private campground near Balcony Falls called "Stoners". it's the family's last name - I think there are in the phonebook. super campground also right on the river.

If it is safe to assume that you are actually in Roanoke, then Fairystone St. Park is nice, wooded, well kept up, on a lake w/fish, and reasonably priced.

The problem with Douthat is that all the campsites are thisclose - you get NO privacy at your campsite, though you can get next to the water, there is no "seclusion" like our OP wants.

I prefer the awesome Grayson Highlands myself, and the nearby New River State Park over the NC line
