Default Walmart = Best home buyer ever?

Walmart pays a pretty penny for homes in Clearbrook

Quote:
As you can see the area looks like a ghost town and Walmart paid a pretty penny for these homes.
For example, one home was valued at a little over $176,000 and Walmart paid just under $1.7 million dollars.
Altogether, the company purchased about 40 acres at a cost of $13 million bucks.
The homeowners asked for the moon and got it.
One home was assessed at $150,000. Walmart paid $630,000 dollars.

I know a lot of people were against them building in that location. Even some of the residents if I recall. But when you're offered, in one case, almost 10x the value of your home, its hard to say no!

I was hoping this WalMart would not be allowed to rape the beautiful countryside at Clearbrook for this ugly supercenter. No longer will Clearbrook be the nice "upscale" part of southwest county. As a matter of fact I think many folks will decide to move from that area. WalMarts' plan is to buy up as much land as possible and make it into what WalMart envisions. Why not build another "big box" store, more gas stations, paved parking lots, etc?
It is interesting that a few years ago a citizens group was successful in preventing a new interstate from being built there but they failed in their efforts against WalMart!

I'm actually surprised WalMart was allowed to build there as well.
I thought WalMart had actually canceled plans to build there after getting so much resistance. Maybe they just claimed that they had 'canceled' the plan to ease some of the pressure and get themselves out of the news for a while before they moved in for the kill.

But, I actually don't think many people will move. Except the people who are being paid to leave, of course. People always complain about Wal-Mart coming to town and how they won't shop there or will move but when push-comes-to-shove it never actually happens. And unfortunately, if people did really move, Walmart would probably love it. They would just buy up all the land and build a Sam's Club..lol.

If, however, someone could really convince people not to shop there, and there was a conscious community effort to boycott the store, that could seriously hurt the profitability of that location. That would probably make Wal-Mart think twice about building in areas where they aren't particularly wanted. Again, that will never happen though.
