Why not build another "big box" store, more gas stations, paved parking lots, etc?
It is interesting that a few years ago a citizens group was successful in preventing a new interstate from being built there but they failed in their efforts against WalMart!

I'm actually surprised WalMart was allowed to build there as well.
I thought WalMart had actually canceled plans to build there after getting so much resistance. Maybe they just claimed that they had 'canceled' the plan to ease some of the pressure and get themselves out of the news for a while before they moved in for the kill.
But, I actually don't think many people will move. Except the people who are being paid to leave, of course. People always complain about Wal-Mart coming to town and how they won't shop there or will move but when push-comes-to-shove it never actually happens. And unfortunately, if people did really move, Walmart would probably love it. They would just buy up all the land and build a Sam's Club..lol.
If, however, someone could really convince people not to shop there, and there was a conscious community effort to boycott the store, that could seriously hurt the profitability of that location. That would probably make Wal-Mart think twice about building in areas where they aren't particularly wanted. Again, that will never happen though.
