What area fits this?
Private, country, cooler, hardly ever need air conditioning. Near a hospital, not more than half-hour. Don't want to live in a "Community" like condo communities or a "neighborhood." Want about 2-5-10 acres. An hour away to great book stores and good shopping is fine. Older house with some character, fixer upper okay. Nothing new. Probably asking for fast internet would be too much! Roanoke sounds like a good place, but need space. Not used to having anything but trees for neighbors! Thanks, I know something like this must be there somewhere. Coming to visit soon and would like to check out "outer" areas.

Higher elevations = less air conditioning. Montgomery County has some rural parts(although with Va Tech there it is a growing area). The temperatures there tend to be cooler than the Roanoke valley. They sometimes get snow when Roanoke gets none during the winter. Botetourt County might suit you also with your request, around the town of Buchanan(which is almost adjacent to Blue Ridge Parkway). This is mountain country!

I'd say Floyd. Not sure on the internet thing, but should meet the rest of your requirements...

Maybe somewhere up toward Catawba would work. Great views and higher elevations up that way to keep things cooler in summer. There's only one big road in and out of there, though, so I don't know if things get hairy there in the winter. You'll be relatively close to Salem and Roanoke for most all the amenities you may need.

Thank you!
Thank you, thank you. I am writing these down. We are going to go for a short visit soon and I want to check out as much as I can in a week. We'll be riding the roads, checking out the atmosphere! The road (bad traffic or icy) is an important element since I have to get to work at a hospital. Maybe I should try to find all the hospitals and travel from them to towns, see how the trip is. Not that I have a job yet, just trying to figure it all out. Any other ideas welcome!

I think you could find what you're looking for in Roanoke County or Franklin County. When we were looking at the area, we contacted a realtor to show us around. You can get some acreage in Roanoke County, you're close to the hospital and close to shopping and other conveniences.

Floyd would only work if you lived on or near Rte 8, at least 7 miles north of town. That would put you within range of Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg. We do have high speed internet in Floyd and wifi available at Cafe del Sol, Subway and maybe a few other places. About half the roads in the county are not paved and cows outnumber people about 3 to 1.
