I am no fan of the politics of Liberty University or their right-wing agenda but I do know they pump a lot of money into the local economy of Lynchburg, which has helped the area build roads, schools, etc and has made the area a great place to raise a family. I don't think anyone should get a view of Lynchburg or the entire region(Roanoke, Smith Mountain Lake, Blacksburg) just by focusing on this narrow image. Its a great place to live and yes, we don't have traffic nightmares, gangs, high property taxes, etc. Everyone would love to have a great job and many of the young move to other areas. Lets face it folks, America is in decline and the jobs and security of yesterday may not return.

Millstone Tea Room is another fine restaurant. There are also a number of very good ones--Main Street, Dish, Shoemakers, Isabella's, and Grace.

Make that four: Randolph College!
Plus at least two technical/community colleges that I can think of.

Are you kidding us?? What are these same things?? You Lynchburg 'Lovers' blow my mind with your romanticized vision of Lynchburg that does not exist. It's so flaky it's sick!
Every major civic organization (Rotary Clubs, Lions, Garden Clubs, Jr. League), three colleges (Lynchburg, Sweet Briar, Liberty) that all offer cultural opportunities, sports venues (again the colleges and Hillcats), Country Clubs, Tennis Clubs, endless volunteer opportunities. The local colleges all offer adult education classes.
This may be true but the people in Lynchburg, while not rude, are small town oriented, clicky, closed minded, and boring!
There are scout troops, little league, soccer, ballet, karate, etc for children.
Lynchburg is centrally located to the mountains, the beach, Smith Mountain Lake, for wonderful day trips. For shopping, Charlottesville and Roanoke are also an easy day trip.
That's just it, you have to hit the highway and go somewhere else. Lynchburg the 'city' is totally worthless. They are better off tearing it all down and starting over!
Lynchburg also doesn't have a lot of the disadvantages of many larger cities: crime, gangs, traffic (except Ward's Road on weekends), high cost of living.
The misnomer of living in big cities is that yeah, while statistically more crime exists, it's always in select neighborhoods. You can live in certain suburbs which are identical to small towns: quiet, family oriented, crime free, etc, etc. But you are exposed to more culture, more diversity, more action, etc, the stuff that balances a person out in life. Don't isolate yourself.
People that complain of boredom are simply boring people.

No, you're wrong man. Lynchburg is BORING. I've tried to make things happen here but it is not in the cards. Only an outsider sees that.

I'm an outsider who has lived in Chicago, Seattle, Atlanta, LA, Denver and in the NY suburbs. While there are not as many options I found plenty to do when I wanted. I enjoy sports car racing and VIR is just over an hour away--one of the best tracks in the US. The new theater complex adds a major asset in that area. For live sports you have good minor league pro ball, Liberty football, basketball, and hockey and lower division sports at the other colleges.
Restaurants were covered and there are plenty and most 25% less than big cities with no waiting most times.
Live music--big shows just an hour away in C'Ville. Some good smaller local shows.
Theater--lots of local and college productions.
Art--growing all the time. RC museum is very good. Lots of smaller shows at coleges and galleries that are popping up all over.
Hiking, etc--Blue Ridge is great.
Shopping--all you need except some high-end stores.
Missing--a zoo

Makes me wonder what kind of things he tried to make happen. And how it was presented: "Up north, we did it this way . . . "

No problem, it's hard to gauge someones real thoughts from a message board. I was also very tired and in a touchy mood.
To the question at hand on people bored to death in Lynchburg. How in the world do people not commit suicide in smaller towns with much less to do??? I live in Staunton and I'm on the verge as we speak!
Sounds like a serious lack of imagination to me.
