Does anyone have insight into the area behind the Virginia Western Community College? Can anyone with any familiarity with the area give me some info about demographics there? Kids, no kids, old people, crazy drivers, rentals, etc. Pleeeease! I would use the census but it's 10 years old already. The streets are: Winding Way, Dogwood Lane, Heritage Road. I'm looking for a neighborhood where people walk around and know their neighbors.

From my general observation the area doesn't have crazy drivers, rentals or lots of kids. It seems to be a settled area with older folks with a mixture of families. Its a nice area to walk especially to the Va Western campus and Colonial Avenue. It is also close to the Tanglewood Mall area. You could do much worse!

I have read both your postings. When I lived in the area I use to go to open houses often, I was tinkering purchasing a home and even though this neighborhood was out of my price range I still went to the open houses for couriosity sake. I for one love older homes and the character they have which is one reason I liked this neighborhood. Also the lawns are large and seem to be upkept nicely. I think your perception of older people may be true but remember the old folks dont stick around forever and that is one thing I think may be happening in this particular neighborhood, many of the open houses were those of old people who have either passed away or moved on to a retirement community. The one drawback is the homeowner has lived in the home since it was built so they seemed to always be dated. Many people seem to be buying these homes and updateing them and younger generations of families are moving in. I think for kids the neighborhood would be great, keep in mind though its in the city limits so the schools will be city schools which in my opinion isnt a terrible thing but others may disagree. Bottom line this neighborhood is much better than any cookie cutter in North East or South County. I say go for it!

Default Thank you

Thank you very much. You nailed the information I was hoping to gain from this post. I'm am totally comfortable with the city schools. We are urban people and have toured the schools. They look great for our family. I have exceptionally bright kids and am confident they will do will in the city schools.
