We are looking into Luray Caverns, George Washington National Forest, and also, for sure the parkway. We have a 14 year old down to a 4 year old and are looking for inexpensive, but wonderful things to do with our kids. We'll be packing food, so no restaurants for us. We don't mind some ticket prices here and there, but do any of you locals know of discounts we can take advantage of? Thanks.

What are your thoughts on the above places? Is Shenendoah Caverns equal to Luray, or is one better than another. Also, are the G. Washinton park and Jefferson park comprable?

Thanks for whatever help you can give us.

I'd drive the Parkway and hike Humpback Rock. Beautiful views from Humpback Rock and it's not a long hike. I think it's around a mile.

Also Sherando (sp?) Lake. In Natural Bridge (about an hour south), there's a drive-through zoo, as well.

In Staunton, 20 miles south of Harrisonburg, you have the Woodrow Wilson birthplace, Shakespeare Theater, and the Frontier Culture museum. The downtown also offers many historic districts with interesting architecture. You could also get to the Blue Ridge Parkway or Skyline Drive from here in 15-20 mins. have fun!

Humpback rock is awsome! it's a beginners hiking trail so everyone can make it. It's 6 miles south of I-64 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is FREE! Give yourself plenty of time for the parkway if you drive it, but man is it worth it. From I-64 south to Roanoke is free, anything going north from I-64(called skyline drive) you pay. The forests don't have an actual park "enterance" it's just forest. There is Grand Caverns in Grottoes,VA just south of Harrisonburg off I-81. Kids will love the Natural Bridge drive through zoo.
