Default Please tell me this rumor about Henrietta is true....students in the district with good enough grades get into RIT FREE?

I am in Rochester right now house hunting and ofcourse, visiting family.....my brother inlaw told me yesterday something that almost made my mouth drop to the floor. They recently moved to Henrietta from Gates, and my nephew is attending RIT...apparently they have heard from more than one person that if you live in Henreitta and your kids attend Rush-Henrietta schools for a certain number of years, and graduate from Rush Henrietta schools, AND have good enough grades, they are admitted into RIT with a full-ride scholarship?!?!?!?! I was told the reasoning behind the university's generosity is because RIT (which stands for Rochester Institute of Technology, an excellent school for anyone who doesn't know) pays NO taxes to the town of Henreitta, so they let in students in the school district to the school for free. I do know that Henreitta is one of the fastest growing suburbs of Rochester, and does have relatively low property taxes accorss the board....but is this true? If so it could DRASTICALLY change my priorities for finding a home in the area!

ummmmmm....... kinda doubt it. I've never heard of it. And I doubt RIT doesn't pay any property taxes since it is a private college and a huge campus on what would be prime property to develop.

I would suspect RIT has an embedded program in Rush-Henrietta to encourage kids to get a college education... although I don't know for sure.

I do know that if a person is employed by RIT, or the U of R, immediate family members do get awesome tuition breaks. (both of these institutions are private colleges, not in the SUNY system, which is already subsidized).

Henrietta is one of the faster growing suburbs by nature of the land availability to expand away from the city, and because the town board has been somewhat more friendly (in a kinda cautious manner) with business & developers.

Give the Rush-Henrietta school board as well as RIT a call, i'minformed. Then ask for it in writing if it is true.

I think I just might....my brother inlaw said it was almost "top seceret" and that its kept very low key....but I'd imagine if there were any truth to it at all I could atleast get some straight answers from the school board.

Well, I think i could at least shed some light on this. I just graduated from RH with a 94 aver and a 34/36 on my ACT, and I'm still paying for RIT. What the program is is that current students at RH have the ability to take RIT classes during their time in high school free of charge. it is a program that the school district has through RIT and is available to the high school students only. hopefully that helped shed some light on the situation.

My high school in Wellsville, NY had a similar program I took advantage of in my senior high year. I went to high school in the morning and took a course at Alfred University in the afternoon 3 days a week and worked the other 2 afternoons. I don't believe it was free, I thought it was reduced price, though I can't really recall as it was so long ago.

Anyway, I'm guessing there's similar programs at many schools and closely located universities.

Whoa... not quite right! I have posted on this topic and said that students in their junior and senior year of high school can take courses at RIT and U of R tuition free. They must be qualified to take the courses and I think have their counselor's recommendation. The credits they earn count toward their college credits and they can save a lot of tuition by starting college with many credits. I am a retiree of R-H schools and have had many neighbor children take advantage of this wonderful opportunity... one of whom started college as a second semester sophomore! He took a lot of college courses during the summer and school year while completing his HS credits.

lol....well thanks for responding. And yes, I did learn of the actual facts not too long after posting this long ago. But I have actually already moved back to Rochester and we decided on Greece instead.
