Hey Everyone, considering moving up to Monroe County this summer to pursue some law enforcement work or something of a similar fashion (social case worker, probation, corrections, administrative, patrol, juvenile delinquency, half way homes, etc).

Ive checked out the Monroe County website and applied to a few civil service exams but was curious if anyone here just moved into the area and landed a job fairly quick... Right now I reside in Chautauqua County NY so if I cant find anything in Monroe County it wont be a huge hit if I have to move back home (2-3 hour drive).

Or if anyone knows of any individuals I should get in touch with that would be greatly appreciated! I did a 2 month internship with the Chautauqua County Sheriff's and the Senior CSI there was going to contact a few people on my behalf but any other help would be great!

And Yes, I know Monroe County is fairly large, I dont have a precise area in Monroe that I want to settle on. My neighbor who was a probation officer, social services worker and judge advised me to check out the entire county for work.

you can take the RPD test. The written test was a couple months ago so I'm not sure if they have another one coming up. Also look out for Monroe Sheriffs road patrol test. Usually you have to start part time, then work your way up to full time.

Monroe might be a little more difficult. One MC deputy we know worked for the 911 office for quite a while before getting into the dept., the other was a security guard at UofR and has a B. of Sci. degree (the former has a degree from MCC). In a nutshell it seems that MCSD and even the city can be kinda difficult to get into, plus you have to factor in affirmative action and whatnot. I know this too from folks who tried to get into the RPD.

Yea... Its beginning to seem more and more that I chose the wrong degree to graduate with... When I first went to college for Criminal Justice it was definitely a field I wanted to study and job outlook looked great... Now with the recession everyone and their mothers are jumping into the field... It seems each area ranges from bad to worse for job outlook... Here in Chautauqua County we are a mess... I spoke with the Senior CSI here and he advised me to get out while I can because they are laying people off every week it seems like. He told me he is in Quantico VA for the FBI Academy which was almost cancelled because of the lack of funds (and that is all federally funded).

yes, you get more points if you are a minority, woman, military experience, etc. So competition is tough

You may want to look in to see if CBP is hiring in the area. They sometimes hire in the offices that they have in Rochester. Also ICE. There is a facility in Batavia, which isn't too far.
