My daughter is a student at the university and is considering renting a room in a house on the lower address numbers of Ellicott. Is this a safe neighborhood? Should I be concerned as a parent? She will have a car and will be working during the day and returning to the house each evening. I've read mixed comments about the area including gun shots. Is this still a problem?

Definitely the potential for gunshots in the area at night. Property crime and holdups are possible, but not a certainty. She could do better, but if she's driving to and from school/work it's doable. I imagine some blocks on Ellicott Street are fairly quiet. If she's just renting a room and not locked into a lease I'd say give it a shot. Areas closer to Genesee Valley Park might be a step up.

Make sure that you visit the area personally but my first reaction is look elsewhere. There are many other great areas & safer too.
