So the company I work for, EarthLink, decided last week to move our Rochester headquarters from HSBC Plaza to the new building going up at Alexander and Monroe (the larger main structure, not the 2nd smaller building you'll see in the follow pics), and apparently the city is banking on this new building to help revamp the entire area. I took a stroll over there today on lunch to get some pictures of the progress and get a feel for the area during the day. As an employee I'm stoked to be moving from a run down highrise like HSBC plaza to a new state of the art facility with a parking garage right next door. As a pedestrian who will take many a lunch time walk in the area, I'm skeptical of the current state of the area and really hope the next few years brings some big changes. It's still too early to get a feel for how the corner area is going to look due to the ongoing construction and the lack of a nice sidewalk on the north side of Monroe, but I'm sure it's going to be a gem once completed. I just hope the surrounding area can keep up, as this will really become a nice area of the city to visit if they can make this in to an East End/Park Ave kind of place. It has the potential as long as enough private investors have the vision and resources to make it a reality.

Anyways, here are some sketches from Buckingham Properties website, and some photos I took today. Personally, I like the style and design, I think it'll fit right in when complete. Again, with no sidewalks at the moment, it's tough to see it working because of how close it *appears* to be to the roadway, but I think that perception will change upon completion. I sure hope it does lol. What do you guys think? Since it's on the outskirts of downtown, do you all think this fits in better in this area than Paetecs new building in the heart of downtown fits in there?

Yeah it's the old Genesse Hospital site. I believe they're actually keeping one portion of that building up (on the north side of the plot, in front of the current ViaHealth building I believe), and have taken the rest down.

You think that the state of -that- area is inadequate?
I don't mean to be critical but you really need to get out more.

I think that that area is above average for this or any other city.

Why, because it has a few bars but is otherwise in need of a major aesthetic overhaul?

There are no big hills there, so it can't be revitalized.
