Also, if private schooling is of interest, there are stellar ones in Brighton (correct me if I'm wrong fellow Rochesterians): Brighton = McQuaid (parochial); Harley, and Allendale/Columbia or is that in Pittsford?
Allendale is in Pittsford, right near the border of Brighton. Brighton is much more diverse in terms of class than Pittsford and in terms of type of housing stock. The neighborhoods along East Avenue are filled with expensive, gorgeous, old mansions and are very old-money affluent but relatively low key about it. There are some wonderful, charming neighborhoods with nice homes from the early part of the twentieth century near Twelve Corners which is essentially the town center with shops/restaurants ext. These can be be very affordable neighborhoods, but the yards are smaller. There are also many more rental options which are very inexpensive along French Road in Brighton closer to the Henrietta border.
The homes in Pittsford tend to be newer and on sprawling large lots - some are definitely of the "McMansion" variety. However, there are also some gorgeous leafy/forested neighborhoods and the village is beautiful. Out towards Mendon, the homes are even further spread out with a rural feel but still within the school district.
Parts of Perinton are also beautiful. The homes are comparable to Pittsford but are more affordable because the commute is longer to the city. The area is pretty hilly and scenic. They have a great community center for the kids, and are close to the nicest shopping area just across the border into Victor (also a comparable town but quite far out). Fairport village lies within Perinton - lovely canal front with lots of cute antique houses.
