Relocating to the Rochester area, opinions on areas wanted
Hi there! I'm relocating to the Rochester area soon, and though there are plenty of searches for apartments and townhomes on the internet, nothing speaks more than personal experience.
Basically I'm asking if anyone has recommendations for places to live around Victor, Fairport, Henrietta, Pittsford, or Perinton. My only requirements are that it's safe, and at or less than 1,000 a month after amenities, and allows a cat.
Again, I know the internet is fully capable of finding places that match that, but I would love to hear some people's opinions on good and bad places. Again, safety is key. I'm coming from a non-safe area in a different state, and it's a major concern!
Thanks so much!

Are you looking for a 1, 2 or 3 bedroom. And are schools an issue?
Also, why did you choose those specific towns. It's fine, just trying to get an idea of what you're looking for. Safe is also a relative term meaning different things to different people. where I live has a perception of not being safe and we have our issues but I don't feel unsafe, but someone else might. So what is your guidelines for safe.
Also do you want to be somewhere you can walk to places, not all of the suburbs are real walkable but some are depending on where you live.

Yes - Schools are a big consideration if you have kids. If no kids, why not the city? It's very safe (in the right areas).

No kids, and idealy 2 bedrooms! I chose those cities because one of the two living there works in Fairport, the other in Henrietta.
As for why I didn't chose Rochester itself, I have this strange idea that Rochester is New York's D.C., and that frightened me away. I'm totally open to Rochester if it's safe!
Oh, and as for safe, I just mean, well, no shootings or murders all the time. I want to be abl to get in at night and not have to worry about walking to my front door. I'm aware that anything can happen, but, as in Maryland, I'm sure there are some areas that are worse than others!

Okay, that helps.
As for Rochester. While we have our issues I wouldn't call us the "DC of New York" Park Ave area is very nice and you could probably find a 2 bedroom in an old house. It's very walkable and as for going out of the city everything is "15 minutes away" driving.
Fairport is the village within the town of Perinton. If you want walkability and Village feel, Fairport, the Village of Pittsford and the Village of Victor are very nice. Fairport and Victor will put you further away from the city. I am not familiar with rentals in those towns.
Henrietta has a couple of nice appartment complexes but it's definetly a suburb.
If you want a complex you might want to check out Brighton. Brighton is closer to the city and has some nice complexes.
I haven't rented in years as I own which is definitely more affordable here than in a lot of places.
Good Luck!

Brockport is another walkable village. It has a SUNY campus, which can be seen as a good or a bad thing.

what do you mean by New York's DC? Rochester is not the state capital if thats what your asking, i dont know what else you would be getting at. DC is a great city, but its far bigger, more expensive, and much more cosmopolitan. Theres really not too much in common.

I quite obviously don't think that Rochester is not the state capital. And on that note, Washington, D.C. isn't Maryland's capital, either. Please re-read my statement.

It was the safety, that I was comparing it to. Washington, D.C. has some lovely parts, and some very bad parts, and I always assumed that Rochester was the same. There's places in D.C. that you just don't go at night. I was curious if that applied for Rochester, as well, that's all.

It's absolutely applied for Rochester, but isn't that for anywhere? I can even name a few small cities (I'm talking less than 100k) where you'd be better off avoiding at night. If you want to see specifically the local desirability and safety of Rochester neighborhoods, check out this map.

Ah! Thank you so much! Right now I've found a place that I'm looking into- I think it's in Brighton? Seems like that area borders the green, so that's good!
