That’s exactly right. 14621 is huge so it can be difficult to make generalizations about it. The neighborhood kind of has too boundaries North of 104 is very similar to Irondequoit and in great condition. Norton is also a cutoff with the streets north generally being nice and south not as nice. Although as you head farther east past Franklin HS and toward northland lyceum Norton its self isn’t too bad either. I would even argue that a few pockets of 14621 closer to Bausch and Lomb are ok as well.

It's similar to Syracuse's Southside into the Valley neighborhoods where Ballantyne Road forms a line(give or take, as there are some solid areas north of the road and some iffy apartments just south of it). Then the further south you go down South Salina Street, the better(especially south of Seneca Turnpike).
Good point there is some absolutely amazing architecture throughout the inner city including the rougher neighborhoods.

The West side also has a number of rough neighborhoods mainly Genesee Jefferson, Dutchtown, and Edgerton.
Also in my last post I may have bit a bit hard on Edgerton. There are defiantly some rough corners along Dewey, Emerson, and Fulton. But not all of the Edgerton neighborhood is that bad… and it defiantly doesn’t hold a candle to some parts of 05 or 21.

BTW here are some cool buildings in Edgerton:

Thanks for responding, everyone, and for the pics - I have to figure this forum thing out, as this isn't appearing as a response to specific comments. Anyway, I want to check out the bad neighborhoods because I like being around poorer people, I'm sympathetic to ideas about institutionalized poverty, and, I don't know, I kind of like grit and grime, too, what can I say, I find beauty in it - yet I'm not entertained by desperation, I hate it, this isn't a voyeuristic thing. And a suburban, manicured lawn is just as "real," I harbor no illusions about "sheltered people" or what have you. I like to feel a little tough myself, perhaps. I don't really know how to answer the question of why I seek these places out, except that I simply like bad neighborhoods. I like to know my city - and am super excited about Rochester!

May I suggest waiting until the summertime when the streets are Live. Clinton, Joseph, Jefferson, Genesee, Lyell, Dewey are a must in the summertime. Also the Bay and Goodman area. You should also spend a day at the DHS office to see what poor people have to go through for a couple of foodstamps. I'll let you know how it really is.

How many Cadillacs do you see at that office on any given day?

I agree an that's one of the things that makes me mad about rochesterians. Especially black people. They are notorious about spending on clothes sneakers cars and clubs but be at DSS the next day. But there are those like me who are getting assistance in school, work and take care of their kids the best way they can. BTW i'm black too.

Everything except a day at the foodstamp office sounds great. I am aware that long waiting and bureaucracy are part of the poverty experience, but I'm really just talking about wandering streets, not a full sociological immersion. I'm not expecting to go into any houses or get involved in any situations. I've been in some serious slums, none of this will be "new" to me in that sense, only that Rochester itself is new to me! Just over a week until I get there!

Also if your interested in the city you might want to consider scheduling a ride along with the RPD, if you’re interested all you have to do is call the station and ask; and they can help set things up for you. Just keep in mind that Rochester has only have two patrol divisions for the entire city so you would have to ask specifically for the posts in 14621/
upper falls/ Genesee-Jefferson.

Eastern division: (585) 428-9800
Western division: (585) 428-9810

Also watch out for the clean sweep this spring. Its a great program where people pick up trash, plant gardens, and wash away graffiti; and just pitch in to show pride in the city. All city neighborhoods get attention and its open to everyone.

This is the last thing I was expecting to ever see posted on this forum. Actually, I can't even say it's the last thing, because I never would have expected it to begin with. Kudos to you for your honesty, and also realizing there is a legitimate problem with the social assistance program in this country. Anyone else here would have called me racist or slammed me for making a generalization, but it's refreshing to see a black person openly admit there is a problem. And for that, I personally want to thank you, and wish you well in your educational journey as well as your family, I hope you come out on top and beat the system

I think the problem is that it isn't exclusively Black folks that exhibit such behavior. I think many people can run to that just to justify certain feelings they may have about certain people without putting the issue of PA abuse.

Also, many times people just wear knockoff versions of certain clothes.

Thank you and yes i'm completely about honesty. Once people are honest then we can begin to fix problems. Not jus in Rochester or about poverty but with any issue.
