ALBANY, N.Y. (January 28, 2008) -- Despite overall growth in the supply of physicians in New York between 2002 and 2006, many upstate regions saw no change in the number of physicians per 100,000 people, and two regions, Western New York and Mohawk Valley experienced declines in physician supply over that time period, according to a new study from University at Albany's Center for Health Workforce Studies.

re: healthcare. I telecommuted for a small California company with no local presence in NY. I ended up getting coverage via Bene-Care which is simply a middle-man to most of the major providers. However, you get group rates VS individual rates when going direct with the providers. That was a while ago and I have no idea how competitive they are with rates currently. But I believe it was like a whopping $1600/mo for family coverage with max benefits.

Blue choice is one of the best insurances in the area. I used to have Perfered Care and they were also good but the coverage outside Rochester was a little harder to find doctors that take it. I was going to switch to cigna this year when we could change our health care because they had good coverage and was cheaper than Blue Choice but not many doctors (especially the doctors I see normally) do not accept them.

Thanks. I think I might go with Blue Choice.

I'm from there and wish I still was there, I'm in the armpit of Texas now. I lived in the Brockport-Spencerport area. Loved it.

And it is quite true.......I've been trying to get my boyfriend to move back to NY to "open up shop" so to say in Upstate NY and other physicians (originally from NYS) keep telling him how horrible health care is up there. Thus, many of our doctors upstate are becoming international med school grads which I think is the most depressing and lamest thing ever!!!!!!!!

I would never say we have horrible health care, to the contrary, our hospitals are top-notch. We do have a problem with older doctors retiring and younger ones not staying around as they are lured away to the sunbelt areas of the country. I have a daughter who is finishing up her NP program at the UofR this spring and she has her pick of jobs.....

Have your bf look into Strong. They are growing rapidly and the jobs are there.

And analyzing his comment "overly dependent on others" makes me think he does not have the connection to family/friends that others come back for. I know many who moved back for strictly that reason Granted, their jobs were area-proof, but they did put more importance on family ties then sunny weather.
