Hi,

I was trying to interpret that post. When you say ""be careful because most of those streets go into the city", do you mean the area is unsafe, or those streets are unsafe, or the city itself (where the streets lead to) is unsafe?

I'm looking at a couple of apartment complexes in the Brighton area: Briar Manor (131 Greystone Lane) and French Court (515 French Rd). Any opinions regarding safety, housing quality, etc?

Thanks in advance.

Brighton is totally safe, and those streets you mentioned are safe both inside and outside the city, with the exception of Clinton which only gets dicey downtown and north of downtown until it hits Irondequoit.
Both apartment complexes are fine. I know Briar Manor better. It's a very large (many buildings), very well managed suburban complex. Lots of people have lived there at one time or another. Many families and elderly people.

I used Google maps to look at the area and I noticed Briar Manor was roughly 5 times larger than French Court. I thought it would be more difficult to handle such a high number of tenants and do so effectively (as compared to 1/5 of that population, number of apartments, etc.).

I was also looking at apartment ratings ( http://www.apartmentratings.com/rate/NY-Rochester-Briar-Manor-Apartments.html ) and I saw several negative opinions for Briar Manor, so I'm trying to get a better idea of what living there would be like (they have some move-in specials currently that would result in significant savings compared to French Court, but would it be worth it if the place is as bad as described on ApartmentRatings.com?).

Ontario is a different community than the others you have listed but don't rule it out based on being in Wayne County. I'm white; I grew up in Ontario and had black friends in school. I'd love to say hi to you on the street! Ontario has some very nice features like lower taxes, natural space, and lake access. It doesn't have a happening single scene however. For that you might want to rent a nice place in the city. Good luck!

garmin239, just trying to educate the uninitiated. I see you've posted quite a bit on these boards. You must have a wonderful social life.

You may question my education (two technical AAS degrees, one B.of Sci., one master's, all earned in Rochester, and paid for without government handouts), but I question how rabid supporters of a town which has few attributes these days, could be all that educated, themselves. Besides, most folks in those parts go for a liberal arts degree, and go to work for a place like Paychex, and call it a life, anyway. Or teach or work for the guv't., or a no-profit. Yawn.

NY Times article on Upstate, the brain drain, actual stats, and reminders that no, I am not alone or "uneducated", as you people claim:

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/13/ny...gewanted=print

Oh. so we have a master's graduate, most of his friends from H.S. (except for one, lol) have left for greener pastures. Wow, sounds familiar.

I'd guess that with a technical master's degree (probably similar to the one I hold), this dude is pretty smart, and sees the writing on the wall, like so many other Upstaters.

Increase of 30,000 prisoners in Upstate between 1990 and 2006 helped (!) the population #'s, there. Fantastic. My sister attended Fredonia, 10 years ago. The inmates at a nearby prison were allowed to peruse the white pages, so they could cold call women for chatting, possible phone sex, etc. Basically, harassment over the phone. Hmmm, NY tax dollars at work!

I see there have been few posts, since this past Spring. The uninitiated need to know what they might be getting themselves into, which is why I wrote my "rant", as some have described it. Funny, the e-mails supporting my "rant" outnumber the negative attacks you people have written. One poster (whose name will go unmentioned), stated he showed my "rant" to his co-workers in RaChaCha, and several said I was spot on in my assessment. All but one of his co-workers is intent on leaving wonderful Rochester.

I suggest you people educate yourselves, a little, by reading the letters to the editor in the D&C, and by asking outsiders what they think of Rochester. Friends of mine from the NE Corridor have a very poor opinion about Rochester, in general. Wish I'd listened more intently to them, some years back, when I was still drinking the kool aid, i.e., Jim Jones Punch.

As far as Upstaters living in SC, jbertol2, hmmm, lessee, I work with over a dozen, I'm training a former Rottenchesterarian at work, at least two work at the supermarket where we shop, and I've met many others around the state, including several of whom moved here within the last two years. Charlotte, NC, is considered Buffalo South, by many. Yeah, it's all ice cream and puppies over at the UofR, eh?;-) Too bad the private sector continues to bleed precious tax paying jobs, in Upstate, while supporting all manner of public sector jobs (10:1 ratio, in NY, at last count).

I've seen the parents of friends of mine, in Rochester, reduced to working menial jobs in their 50's and early 60's, because they were "downsized", and couldn't find decent jobs to tie themselves over to retirement. Mind you, these are educated, smart people. Yeah, sign me up for that. Multiple degrees, and a Wal Mart greeter position awaits me at 55, or working for a non-profit, or guv't. agency. Yawn.

People in other places are happier, retire earlier, and have more enriching lives. Hey, $104,500 assessed in Rochester gets you around $4,000/yr., in property taxes, and that's on the STAR program. A nice $150K home commands $5500-$6500/yr, or more, depending.

Ya gotta be kiddin' me. NY is a socialist **** pit.

smalltownusa, no, I don't have much in the way of family connections, in Rochester. I turned my back on them, and decided to enlighten myself, in the last several years. Actually, it started a long time ago, when I realized how brainwashed and ignorant many people are in Rochester. They drink that Jim Jones Punch, like you folks. Sorry, I don't sacrifice as much of my paycheck to the guv't. on a weekly/yearly basis, anymore.

As for my wife and I, we love it here-our base salaries went up 20%, and general cost of living went down 15%.

On the other hand, my friends in Rochester are my family, as well as ex-pats from Upstate whom now live all over the U.S. You know, educated, successful folk.

Ex-pat friends never would have achieved any real level of measurable success, had they stayed there.

I love the letters to the editor in the D&C, from out of staters who claim they would live in Rochester, if the taxes were lower.

That's OK, Rochesterians hate outsiders, in general. Judging by the election results, people in Upstate want things to stay the same, i.e., perpetual decline. Most of the rest of the country perks along, while Upstate is stuck.

Did I say they hate outsiders?

Smug town, baby!

Again, unbased claims and sweeping generalizations. You posted an article that talks about an entire region, and does not give specific numbers to Roch.
You claim to have people tell you one thing when I have experienced the opposite in most instances.
Your long winded BS posts could be summed up with "Rochester sucks because I say so".
You offer no support to your arguments when talking about this area other than limited personal experience that may or may not be true.
