Hello,
Thanks to previous posters helpful information and some research, we are narrowing our relocation search from Florida to the Rochester suburbs. We are specifically looking at the Pittsford, Penfield suburbs. I have been trying to get an idea of what the cost of living difference is from North Central Florida area to the Rochester suburb area and online resources I have found so far are not very helpful. Can anyone shed some more light on this? I am a registered nurse and my husband will have completed electrical engineering school when we move. I have been looking at jobs in those areas for salary comparison to Florida in hopes we could see what we will be gaining or losing in terms of income to keep our cost of living the same; but have not been able to find salaries listed in the advertisements. We would appreciate any insight. Thanks!

Few places list salary in ads. It varies based on a persons experience, skill, and education. There are numerous online COL calculators. Don't know if any are better than others, but they will give you an idea. It's an idea and not an exact science. Someone may live on sushi and lobster while others will live on mac & cheese.

I agree with ss20ts. My sister is an RN in Buffalo and makes around 70k per year working about 3-4 overnight shifts per week. She believes the hospital she works at in Buffalo pays a little more than say, Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY (because Strong is a Magnet Hospital and there is more demand to work there). You could also look into Highland Hospital and Rochester General- both are reputable hospitals. Not sure about pay as far as private practices/nursing homes go. I'm not sure about the electrical engineering jobs/salary.

The cost of living is not very high in Rochester, however the areas you are looking at- Pittsford especially- have high property taxes (not sure how they compare to Florida).

Sorry I couldn't be more help to you!

You can direct message me if you have any other questions. I live in the city of Rochester but have friends in each of the suburbs (only about 10-15 minute drive to the city from the suburbs)!

keep in mind NY State has high state taxes, and Florida has no state income tax so you'll need to factor that in.

Pay may "offset" that somewhat and overall cost of living can be on par, depending on what places you are comparing.

FL may have no state income tax and lower property taxes than Rochester....but the HOA fees and Homeowners insurance rates down there negate much if not all of that.

You are correct. Housing prices up there stay low due to the higher taxes, while pre-housing collapse the housing in FL was getting outrageous. (YMV) Most of FL is still high when comparing to WNY, even factoring in HOA, taxes and insurance.
Also, pump prices are lower down here by a little bit, however food costs are cheaper up there and my utilities were cheaper on RGE vs JEA here.

You will find quickly that many people from Rochester ( mainly those that have never lived anywhere else) will use their property taxes as the end all. There is no arguing the fact, they are high, but they are high(er) in Jersey & other parts of the country.
Rochester has a low cost of living overall & is a wonderful place to live.

I can tell you that my husband is an engineer ( mechanical) & we have wanted to move back to Rochester for years now as it is our home. He just cannot find a job that pays him what equal positions will pay him in other areas. We also know several other engineers who have moved away due to the lack of good paying salaries.
I didn't see what type of job the op does, and can only compare Engineering jobs.
