Will be moving to Rochester NY to attend graduate school. Married couple no children and looking for a nice neighborhood to rent 1 bedroom apartment? Want to stay as close to campus as possible. Safe and clean apartment complexes.

I am moving to Rochester in August with my wife for U of R and have been doing research on it for the past 6 months. I already rented my place so I can give some insight. A few questions.

What's your budget? Is she working?

Will you have a car?

When are you moving?

If you want to be in the city I would go with the Park Ave neighborhood. The U of R free bus (Orange Line) runs along Monroe Ave (south of the neighborhood) and can be a 15 minute ride. We got a 2 BR with util in neighborhood for $900 - I am sure you could meet your budget.

Search for rentals on CL in your budget/BR parameter in "park ave", "mt hope", and "strong".

The Mt. Hope/Strong area can be walking distance to campus.

If you want an "apartment complex" look at Apartments in Rochester NY - Rustic Village Apartments Rochester NY - Our Rochester apartment community is situated on 100 acres and located in the Town of Brighton, NY, a suburb of Rochester, conveniently located near the 390 and 590 expressways.

I looked and they were nice, a little farther out though. We went with a historic building just to change things up from our past rentals in complexes within suburbs.

I can answer any questions you have about moving if I can as I am doing the same thing you are. We are also a married couple with no kids and went with a 2 BR for my office and guests from out of town (just a thought).

Also, don't rent site unseen IMO. Some of the older buildings look nice online but are rundown in person. I saw 15 buildings and 4 complexes before picking mine.

The South Wedge is best if you want to be near campus. It's a VERY quick bike ride. The neighborhood is vibrant, walkable, diverse, and has great dining and shopping.

The Mt. Hope/Strong neighborhood is more commonly called Upper Mount Hope. It contains the UR Medical Center and is also very close to the River Campus, but has few rental options.

If you are looking at complexes, Rustic Village is an option (posted above) although I think Elmwood Manor is niceer and also very convenient. Elmwood Manor Apartments and Townhouses - Rochester, NY Clintwood is another option. Clintwood Apartments - Our Apartments

I agree with mwr - looked at clintwood and it was nice as well.

Rustic Village is just so popular because it is so huge that there is supposedly never a problem getting a spot.
