Hello,

I am moving to Rochester at the start of August with my wife. We are moving from Los Angeles for me to attend school and she has transferred at work.

I noticed a lot of new people in forums talking about moving into town during the summer (for various reasons).

I figured we could open a thread for new people to discuss the city and places to see for us newcomers.

I want to avoid the seemingly endless discussions of why not to move to Rochester - as people here already moved there!

For the record I researched heavily before moving and going to U of R is worth it; the city will be a great change from LA for a few years.

Anyways - anyone else recently moved or moving to the city want to say hello?

Question for locals - where is the best/closest/safest place to play blackjack and poker? Canada somewhere?

Welcome to Rochester!

With an attitude like yours I'm sure you'd be able to be happy anywhere. Even if Rochester were the cesspool that others would like you to believe I think with your mindset you'd do well here.

As for your question about blackjack...there are casinos on the Reservations in the Finger Lakes and near Buffalo which are fine if you are just looking to gamble. But the ones in Niagara Falls, Ontario in Canada are much nicer and more exciting. Not to mention they are near Niagara Falls which is beautiful. NF is about 1.5 hours from Rochester but unfortunately you do need a passport to cross the border now. This was not the case up until a few years ago.

Thanks just_sayin, I hope so.

My wife and I are relocating to try something new and pursue my graduate degree.

She likes slots and I like blackjack, here in LA we have indian reservations with casinos (no free alcohol though) about 2 hours from us or Laughlin/Vegas about 4.5 hours.

Sounds like a similar situation to what I have now, but everything is closer. So gambling is legal in Ontario? I didn't know that.

We planned ahead for the passports (living near the border) and should get them any week now.

Turning Stone Casino in between Syracuse and Utica could be another option: Enjoy yourself | Turning Stone Resort Casino

There may be some options at nearby Vernon Downs too: Vernon Downs Casino & Hotel

Both are about 2 hours from Rochester.

Those look interesting, what is the legality of those places? Reservations? Or are there different gaming laws in NY?

Are any of them "Vegas Style" - where drinks are free while you play?

Most are on reservations. Vernon Downs isn't and has horse races as well. I believe that Turning Stone is BYOB and may serve alcohol at Lava Night Club, but don't quote me on that. This may help: Beverage Services | Turning Stone Resort Casino

Here are a few Niagara Falls casinos: Seneca Niagara

Casino Niagara

Fallsview Casino Resort,
