I guess I'm the odd one out here but I actually think NYS markets its tourism industry fairly well, at least better than most states. I'd say they are doing a good job with the whole "I Love NY" marketing campaign. However, I do agree that Rochester could greatly benefit by advertising more a bit more. I couldn't see many out-of-staters coming all the way to Rochester but definitely people within the state. As many of you have already mentioned, so many people, even long time NY residents have no idea of the great things Rochester has to offer.
It seems that NYS focuses most of it's marketing effort to it's own residents. I would think that it would be wiser to bring outside money in.

I think it is smart to focus their marketing efforts mostly to NY residents. I just don't really see it being worth the money to advertise to other state residents. Just can't see many people coming from hundreds of miles of away to visit Rochester, at least not in its current state. I wish they would of course, just don't see it happening.

Out of state marketing can be effective if you advertising a unique attraction that becomes the destination. The day to day of most cities won't be worth the trip and the canal sites are best marketed to the boating community. Letchworth State Park makes an attractive stop but what can you tie it in with to justify the drive and are there adequate hotels for those who aren't hauling a camper?

Well, places like Pittsburgh, Albany or Altoona could plan their summer vacations to Rochester instead of the Jersey Shore for example. Places that are an easier drive to Rochester than Cape Cod, Downeast Maine or the Jersey Shore would be surprised to see what the town has to offer.
If Providence, RI can turn itself into a regional tourist draw, so can Rochester.
Rochester has much better natural assets, and at least equal cultural assets.

This right here. The Lilac Festival draws 500,000, The Jazz Fest draws 400,000, The Strong Museum draws 600,000 a year. And then the Canal, Ontario Beach, Genesee River, and amazing parks. There's Seabreeze Amusement Park, a really nice zoo, an amazing Arts neighborhood with really cool shops and restaurants and The Memorial Art Gallery, George Eastman Museuem...etc.The canal towns of Fairport, Pittsford, etc really take you back in time.
When people visit who have never been here before they are almost universally surprised at what this city and metro really does have to offer and how nice it is.
I really think Rochester should focus more on its family entertainment and market itself as a premier family destination. If the inner loop plans materialize, and the rumored news that the Strong is actively investigating an expansion, that area of the city could turn into a magnet family destination that gets people here for a multi-day vacation and onto other destination spots in the area.
What do you guys think of this option for parcel 5? I like this idea the best so far. I think It'd be great for downtown. Seems like it would be a place everyone can use, unlike a casino or preforming arts center.
