Why doesn't Wegmans Markets wrap celery in a plastic sleeve like most all other markets? Having myriads of people fingering celery stalks is unsanitary. Is it an environmental thing?

Take a look almost of the fruit and produce. I'm thinking most of it is unwrapped. Loose apples, tomatoes, potatoes...

In fact, most don't wrap celery individually. What most grocers do do, though, is chop off the tops--somehing they wouldn't be able to accomplish with ease if each bundle were placed in a sleeve.

I encountered a Wegmans employees doing this (with one swoop he sliced off all the stacked celery tops), and told him he was removing the best parts lol. He laughed and said doing so makes the display uniform and takes up less space.
