This is a huge deal for the area, I'm not in this field at all but really good to see us win this.

Makes sense for Rochester to win the bid. Kodak, Xerox and B&L legacy still runs strong in this area and there are lots of workers with relevant expertise. While SoCal is a strong contender, Roc needs this boost a little more.

This is a huge win for Rochester. Let's hope they have a dynamic leadership team. I wonder where they will locate?

This is just awesome. Not only has $110 million been guaranteed from the federal govt, but the state has also promised another $200 million for the institute. And that's not including all the private investment that will come along with it too. With that much funding Rochester should be able to attract the best talent and will encourage entrepreneurs all over the country in photonics to setup shop here. Which ultimately should also generate many lower tech skills related to manufacturing. I'm so glad the decision makers recognized what we have here for photonics, and also respected the history of photonics in the community.

Here is the video the federal govt put out when they first announced the competition for the institute:
Rochester wins federal photonics center

This isn't just going to be photonics either. The video talks about software, healthcare...etc. So it should also generate many side industries from it. Now the question is where the headquarters should go? I kind of think Eastman Business Park makes sense actually. And I'm beginning to think that this is also what Kodak anticipated when they took the Park off the market for sale.

This is fantastic news for this city. Has anything been announced about when the project is projected to start or how many jobs are expected to be created?

This is all well and good as long as anyone with Kodak middle management or higher experience on their resume is automatically disqualified as a candidate for employment

The photonics center in Canandaigua was run mostly by ex-Kodakers.

Senior management crafts the vision for the future, middle management just implements it. Ban them :-)

Congrats to the group responsible for navigating this political process for the win. I'm skeptical that it is a 'game changer' but it certainly be a boost on a number of levels.
