As far as Finger Lake wine country, the beach, scenery, cost...

Is there a certain time of year that the trees turn colors and is that a peak tourism time (more $$) ?

What else is cool and popular in and around Rochester? Anything out there between Buffalo and Rochester that might be an overlooked gem?

In my opinion the best seasons in Rochester are definitely summer and fall. Do you have a rough estimate of the dates you would be potentially visiting?

Not sure about the dates yet but the week of Aug 14 might be good based on Jethro Tull and Santana both playing CMAC that week for reasonable ticket money. Is that a good concert venue?

I went and saw Zac Brown Band a few years ago and I like the place a lot. Covered open air venue, no bad seats, and easy to get in and out of.

I agree with gt87 too. CMAC is a really nice facility. The lawn is like a natural bowl. Also it's in Canandaigua which is a resort town and on one of the beautiful Finger Lakes.

I also agree that Summer or Fall is the best time to visit.

You may also want to consider the last week of June. That's when the Jazz Fest is in Rochester which is a very large 9 day music festival in Rochester's East End. They have daily free outdoor concerts right in the middle of the city. King Crimson is one of the headliners if that interests you

Are you visiting as a family, couple of by yourself? That could help with giving more ideas of other attractions to visit too.

Couple. I saw there were some highly rated B&B's up there. Partial to any in particular?

Also is it better to stay in Rochester itself or out in the lakes (Naples, Geneva, Canandaigua, etc) ?

I love Rochester in the summer and fall. I always advocate to visit later in the summer though, because sometimes early summer can be rainy or still a bit cold. July, August, September are definitely my favorites!

Are you looking for more of a country resort feel, or an urban feel to your vacation? You seriously can't go wrong with anything in Canandaigua. It is a beautiful town.

But if you want more of a city urban sophistication, then I highly recommend the Edward Harris House for a B&B:

Is the Belhurst Castle a good B & B?
