Gates,NY (area,and schools)
I live in Long Island and have been gathering information about possible move to the area. The areas specifically are Gates and Greece at this time. Have gotten alot of info and feeback on Greece but I wish someone could fill me in about Gates including their school district. My wife and I are 35,and 36 and our kids are 4-14 (4 kids).
Thanks everyone,
Lance

I don't have much info on Gates... BUT I would choose to live on the NW side of Greece- in Hilton School District if I were you. IF you live on that border line you get the benifit of the shopping, dining, access to Rt 390... and the added benifit of better schools.

I would say I have to agree with skbs on this fact.

I would say it isn't fair that Greece schools get written off so fast. Yes, there has been controversy in the higher level of the school board; but that doesn't mean the schools themselves are bad.

I am a teacher, with many friends who teach in the Greece Central School District... it says a lot when the teachers don't want to send their own children to schools they teach in. They are getting rougher, test scores are dropping, drugs are more visible... it isn't the same school it was even five years ago. A lot needs to be changed in Greece to make it a competitive educational environment. The town might be one of the safest, but the schools are where the problems lie. Several of these friends have made the move to Hilton and are much happeier... Sad truth, I wish it weren't the case, but Hilton is a much better option education wise. Greece has many other great things to offer a home buyer, but again, that is why I would choose the Greece/Hilton border.

i have lived in the town of gates for 27 years and have raised 2 kids within the gates-chili school district . we have been pleased with the education and with the town. it is far enough away from the city but yet close to shopping and activities. i grew up in greece which is 1o minutes away. taxes were the deciding factor for us when we went shopping for a home. we had a home built with an inlaw apartment in 92--the town of greece was very restrictive with many rules/regulations . the town of gates was much more relaxed and easy to do business with. the school district provided a good education for my children they offer college level classes in the high school and have fine sports /arts programs. rochester as a whole is a great place to raise a family--many activities/festivals/museums etc.--we are now planning a move to nc for retirement--getting out of the cold--and to lower taxes.. good luck you'll like rochester
