My father and mother's families lived there. They could not get out fast enough- their cars were stolen, windows broken, prostitution on the corner. Last summer there was a murder of a woman in that area that made the news...when people- a mob- ran out of their homes and ganged up on her in the middle of the street and killed her- and I don't think there was any specific reason for it. I have a relative who is a cop and he says to never return to that part of the city. Try over the city border into Greece perhaps- the OTHER side of Dewey- North of 104/ Ridge Rd. If you aren't going to be in your home MOST of the time- you will have problems with your property if you live South of that point.

Thanks skbs, but is any part of Greece NY OK?
Thanks for your feedback. Heck, its difficult to get a picture of what's OK and what not if you dont know the place. I hope everything will become clearer when I visit Rochester in June

Look into Greece (North of 104, West of Dewey) for the affordability you are looking for and safety combined and Irondequoit (East of the expressway-Rt 104)- I would stay away from the actual city. Downtown Rochester- if you are unfamiliar, unless you are on the East Side of the City (East of Monroe Ave and South of Alexander) - can get a bit dangerous. Stay away from anything that has a LETTER in the street name- Like "Ave. Letter". I hope that will help- always look at the maps when you find a listing you are interested in.

Have you thought about looking into a townhouse? You would have many more options if you did that and since you wiill not be living there for the majority of the time, you will not have to worry about yard/home maintanence as you would a single family home in other areas... something to think about. You could even branch out into better suburbs if you looked for a townhome... Try Greece, Brighton, Irondequiot, Penfield, Henrietta- it is near the airport, Webster...

SKBS's suggestion to look at a townhouse
Hi SKBS, That is exactly what I will have to do, thanks. Are these areas you mentioned... Greece, Henrietta etc all good areas? Do you think I will be able to find say a 2 bdrm townhouse for my budget in those areas?

Great areas... you will be able to find a townhouse/condo easily $100K or less and you will have better taxes if you do that

Are these areas near to good shopping malls, recreation etc. (sorry for asking all these questions....)
NB: Do these areas you mentioned have good AND bad parts, or can one assume that the whole neighbourhood in general is good?

Greece, NY....the largest suburb of Rochester (population around 95k) is consistantly rated as one of the safest towns in America with populations of over 75k. There aren't really "bad" parts of Greece, but basically the very southeast corner of town, where it is closest to a not so nice part of the city of Rochester, isn't that great.

I live in the older section of Greece. I have for 6 years. I love it. I don't worry about taking my dogs for walks or being at home alone. Sure crimes happen but usually it is minor things caused by teens.
