Default Downtown safety? (e.g. 328 E Main St)

Hi,

I've been reading different threads about safety in the Rochester downtown area, and how some parts are not safe/good to live, etc., but it's kind of difficult sometimes to pinpoint the exact areas that are not good for those of us trying to make a decision from the distance. So, if you had to evaluate a possible rental place located at 328 E. Main st., what would you (the ones who know the area) think about that? Does that fall on the good/safe part of downtown (if there is any)? Comments or ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I would not live on Main Street... anywhere... Or north of that...

If you are looking to live downtown... I would personally keep my search to this area: From Monroe Ave- East to University (area), North To about Alexander St, South- as far South as you want- even into Brighton/Penfield... but Highland is a good stopping point if you want CITY That makes a pretty decent search. Be sure to map it out when you find a property you are interested in. You really need to be careful where you end up- especially at night. I have had family all move out of the city- they lived in the 10th ward- between Lake and Dewey... they will never go back- Life there is very different now.

Hmm, is it Eastman School of Music housing? Or is it outside the Inner Loop?

That's not a 'bad' area per se, but you are pretty close to some bad areas.

I know someone who lives on East and Gibbs. He hasn't had any problems that I know of, but that can be hit or miss.

It's an apartment complex called Chestnut Square ( http://www.farash.com/properties/Property.asp?Prop_ID=5 ) and it's inside the Inner Loop (near the corner of East Main Street and East Avenue). Their rates are much lower than other apartment complexes, so I was thinking whether the reason for that was because that area was just cheaper, or because the area was not good so they had to "entice" potential tenants.
