Funny that this place is never mentioned when Rochester's attributes are brought up. It is a great asset for us. Anyone know of other planetariums open to the public around the country. I can't think of any in NY.

Another article with a great video showing some of the technology. I can't wait to see their renovations and new shows. I love the planetarium and always have ever since I was a kid. It's also amazing because a lot of the technology is custom. A Rochester optics company for instance designed the custom lens for their upgrades. Probably the closest major planetariums would be the Hayden Planetarium in NYC and the Adler Planetarium in Chicago. I can't think of any other major planetariums that would be comparable any closer.

Here is a list of NY planetariums, but I’m not sure of the details of each: https://www.go-astronomy.com/planeta...e.php?State=NY

Syracuse has one at the Museum of Science & Technology: https://www.most.org/watch/planetarium/

There is also this observatory on the Syracuse University campus, but you would have to notify them first. Holden Observatory

Right there are other planetariums in NY and other cities, but they are all small ones, about 25 ft. The Strasenburgh Planetarium is considered a "major" planetarium at 65 ft. Even before the upgrades they were frequently on lists of the best planetariums in the United States

Now with these upgrades, it will be one of the most technologically advanced planetariums and combined with its size, will make for some amazing shows there.

Thanks db. That's the kind of info I was wondering about.

Except for Chapel Hill, all the peer planetariums are in cities of 5 million plus.

It is fantastic, you and your husband will love the renovations and the new experience. Astronomy fanatics should come to the Strasenburg Planetarium if they ever visit Rochester.
