where is the west african community in Rochester? i live in syracuse and i find myself to be a bit lonely in that i have not met many west africans and/or middle class african americans. i myself i am a young mid twenties and work for a company based out of rochester. i was told by one of the people that work in the rochester branch that there's a west african community but of course since i never went to Rochester, i would not know. if anyone knows, would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Hi,

I live in Rochester and I am from West Africa. I think you should move to rochester instead of staying in Syracuse. Hope you reply.

Take care.

I've worked with a few West Africans over the years in Rochester from Ivory Coast and Cameroon. Unfortunately, that about all the help I can give you just to let you know that there is a presence around here.

There is a place downtown on University Ave. called the Baobab Cultural Center that's Cameroon-owned. I went there on a class trip about a month ago and we got Cameroon take out... so there's definitely a Cameroon restaurant too tho I don't remember the name.

Anyway, after taking the class and watching Survivor Gabon I'm pretty fascinated by West Africa. I'd love to go someday.

In Syracuse, it seems like most West Africans live either on the North side or the East side. As for middle class African Americans, the East side is the best bet as well, with some living in the Eastern and Northern suburbs too. Some live on the South side, especially South of Seneca Turnpike or on the sides of the Valley section. Best place to meet such people would be at a local church too.
