I'll give 'em that.

That, and the canal was always considered dumpy in just about every town it went through. At least they cleaned it up and did something with the right of way, plus eliminated all the bridges through downtown which were a huge hassle.

I would agree. It started out as a sound concept, but then local politicians and business interests quickly screwed it up by diverting the routes through cities. I understand that ironically, in many cities the downtown business interests actually thought it would be a good thing to route all that traffic downtown. In fact, it just helped empty out the city faster.

well, you know what they say. Hindsight is always 20/20. If FDR knew the GI bill would lead to the emptying out and blight of inner cities he probably wouldn't have signed it into law.
