My husband and I are moving to Livonia sometime this summer from Long Island. I am leaving my job here of 10 years and I do not have a job lined up. Any suggestions where to go look for one, I do need good medical benefits since my husband is disabled and diabetic. I am under 30 years old so I can basically do anything, but I do not have a college degree. Right now I am working as an account clerk typist for the local government here and I plan on taking civil service test once I get up there.
Thanks |

Mandy, I do know that the upstate economy tends to be weaker. Jobs down here are more ample and higher paying yet cost of living is so much higher. I don't have any specific suggestions but I will caution you again, some parts of upstate have stuggling economies. I wish you well, I'm sure it is not easy with you rhusband being disabled. Glen

Glen, Thanks for the heads up on how hard it might be for me. I know it is harder up there and I am willing to get back into retail for a little while as I look for a better job. If it was up to me I would win lotto and never work again but we all know how realistic that can be. I know living up there is going to be so much easier then down here on the Island, we started out by looking for land to build on in a few years but once I saw the prices of houses and the size of them we couldnt resist.
Thanks again |

Yeah, the economy upstate isn't the greatest but if you can land a decent job the cost and quality of living make it well worth it. The thing that is really more expensive there is property taxes, but they would be considered cheap coming from long island.

Thanks, believe it or not the taxes on the house we are buying up there is about the same as the house we have here on Long Island. The difference is the size of the house has doubled and we have under an acre here and up there we have under 25 acres so that is good. Thanks again.

Mandyl, A friend of mine was turned off to upstate because of the taxes, but he was failing to make a fare comparision. MY home in Long Island is in an old neighborhood, it is 80 years old and about 1700 square feet on a 5000 square ft lot(50x100). If I bought a matching house in Onandaga county I could find it for about $120,000 and my taxes would be 3-4 grand. But I will buy a 2400 square foot new home in a beautiful town (Baldwinsville) on a half acre (wifes choices, wants to stay in a neighborhod-not too rural) with great schools and my taxes will be about the same 7 grand, oh the house is nearly half the price. So it works out, you can't just make a big move like that for economic reasons alone, you have to desire a change in lifestyle, atleast that's how I see it. Glen

Hey Glen, yea I understand about not moving for economic reasons, my husbands family is up in Macedon and Walworth that is why we are moving up to Livonia, just far enough where we wont have to worry about drop ins. Thanks

My nephew lives in Macedon. That area, western Wayne County, is developing nicely. Lots of new construction going on around there.

Yea it is a nice area (Macedon) there is a community of homes being built down the road from my in laws but they are only on 1 acre and too close to each other, we are leaving that here.
