My family and I are huge organic/natural food eaters. There is not a whole foods (or trader joes) in Rochester (or anyother chain like that) We have Wegmans which is an amazing grocery store and has a decent selection of things (they were lacking in meat/chicken when I was there a few weeks ago though). Also Lori's natural foods in Henrietta www.lorisnatural.com. I remember my mom told me a few weeks ago that something may go into Rochester..it *may*have been whole foods. There is a dairy in Pittsford that has wonderful milk, though it isn't organic it is hormone free and comes in plastic or glass (Pittsford dairy). I don't know who Wegmans uses for their private label milk..if I lived there I would want to find out who it was... besides that they just carry that and Horizon (which you couldn't pay me to buy) There is also a great farmers market though I haven't gone in a while to know what the organic availability is but it would be worth checking out

Did you want to move to Rochester itself or the Finger Lakes? I think it would be more of a culture shock to move to the Finger Lakes than to Rochester. It also depends on what kind of things you like to do

No whole foods in Rochester, but that store is overpriced garbage anyways. Wegmans has a decent selection of organic foods. There are also several mom and pop organic stores which are your best bets. There is lori's in Henrietta. There is another store on Marshall street off of Monroe. Can't think of the name. That are also a couple of others that escape me.

This is a good thread. I have a question. Is the land around Rochester flat or hilly or what?

Smile Organic foods

Thanks for the input on the organic markets! I stopped shopping at Wegmans last year because of the story of the cage free eggs and the gross mistreatment of their animals. I have another grocery store here, so I really don't have to go to Wegmans anyway. Do you have another Grocery store up in Rochester, other than Wegmans.

I guess because of all the input we will be looking for housing closer to Rochester. Do any of you know anything about Gates?
I also have been getting house listings from Henrietta. It looks like that might be my second choice.

Thanks again for any info you can post!!!!

Well if you stop shopping at wegmans because of the whole chicken thing, you your only options are small organic food stores such as the ones mentioned above. Though there are other grocery chains out there every grocery store chain treats their animals like that.

It's rolling hills mostly. There is some flat land and some big hills too. It's a mix really. There's an enormous hill SW on Canandaigua Lake where you feel like you're in an airplane looking down on the water.

Rochester is hilly as you head just south and east of the city.... the closer to the lake you get the flatter the land gets, the closer you get to the finger lakes, the hillier it gets. For the city, you've got Cobbs Hill and Pinnacle Hill as the highest points in the city, and which are the backdrop for some of it's nicest neighborhoods..... and you have Charlotte Beach, which is obviously on the lake and is pancake flat. In general, the further south and east you go in the Rochester area, the hillier it is, and the further north and west, the flatter it is.

rochester itself is VERY flat (we always laugh when we start pulling into the area)

I hear you about Wegmans and the eggs...I believe they have rectified the situation though. I saw a sign by the egg display when I was home but I had my 2 kids with me and I'm pg so I didn't have a chance to read it. I mulled over the situation as well and went back and forth (we don't have a wegmans here so it didnt' impact me much) but they do so much for the community and so much for their employees that I thought that they meant more to me (the people they help) than the chickens they don't (or should say didn't) We also have tops market another big chain, I'm sure they have a lot of organics as well

I don't want to offend anyone but I would never live in Gates or Henrietta (and yes I have lots of family in Gates) Henrietta is very commercial unless you go towards Rush (aka lots of strip malls, a regular mall, car dealerships etc...) How much are you thinking of spending on a home?

That is OK. I prefer it a bit flat being that I am originally from Central Indiana and my husband from Northern Germany. I live in an area now of Germany with rolling hills and the reminants of an ancient mountain range. Hills are alright, particularly if there are walking/hiking trails around. I was just curious as to the topography of the area.

How often does it flood there?

Floods? Not very often. At least nothing to write home about. Most floods come in late winter/early spring when you get a really warm day and the snow (that is usually on the ground, except for this abnormally warm and snow-free winter in the northeast) melts fast.
