This is a very informative post, thanks to everyone for good information. These are the three areas we have narrowed it down to as well.

BUT - for some reason, I am more confused than ever. (sigh) The areas themselves cover a lot of territory, and we just don't know where to begin. Are there less desirable areas WITHIN these areas (say on the "borderline" to a not so great area) that we should avoid? It's very difficult going to a new city that you don't know well - first appearances aren't always correct.

That's why we are thinking of renting for a while, to figure out where we like it best... however we must still pick one area for the schools. I hope we are making the right decision to move ...

To me, Brighton is by far the best suburb.... it's close to everything, all three major expressways, and it has intelligent people without the Pittsford attitude... IMO Brighton is just more down to earth than Pittsford.

I agree. While non of them are very diverse, Brighton is by far the least hostile of the suburban communities. Its closer to the city and has better access to the attractions in Rochester.

I agree with Brighton. my relatives are moving to the area. i myself we live in toronto, on. we know whats a good area and having been to rochester twice, we were completely sold on brighton, rochester, ny.
the area we picked for my relatives speaks in volumes. i mean, we haven't seen any place that is so beauftiful, and the fact that when we went to visit the area on a weekday, there were no people idling, tells us, people in the area are all professionals. the hospitality were amazing. and to top it all, we had a police man who confirmed we have picked the best area in rochester. we live in toronto, and we have lived in good areas in toronto and we know good areas, and brigton has it. goodluck in deciding, but again, not to advertise for the area, but brighton is a good pick!

and comparatively speaking, it is actually pretty "diverse" for a suburb in the area.

Considering the lack of diversity in the Monroe county suburbs, yes.

I'd say that the Western suburbs and Irondequoit are decent to good in that regard.
