That area is about 5 miles from the Mall on the Ridge. Close enough to get to for shopping and far enough away not to be a problem. I wouldn't hesitate to move to that area.

what an excellent question i stumbled upon. i don't live in rochester anymore, but i spent 15 years of my life growing up living on melwood drive. i love the neighborhood, when i lived there it was full of families and i have alot of friends that grew up there also. it's close to the mall, but a very safe street/neighborhood. we never had any issues. i'd highly recommend it.
