Rochester Economy (how much, job market, college)

I was looking up unemployment statistics comparing Rochester with Indianapolis, where I will have to go back to in two months. I found that there was no real earth shaking difference in the numbers. Sometimes I got confused who I was looking at because both were very close. I don't think I will have any problem finding a job in Indianapolis. I don't think it will take more than a month or so, especially if I go straight with a temp agency while searching for something long-term. No one has told me to be cautious about the job market in Indy, but everyone does about Rochester? Why? I don't get what the big difference is. Indy is a little bit bigger, but both have 1 million in the MSA. Both have health and education as major employers. I have been reading the local newspapers for the past month at least. Unemployment doeesn't pop up much as a topic. I have gone to employer websites, checked out what they are hiring for and how much. Seems like there is work, at least for me and my husband, anyway. So what is up with all of that exactly?

I don't know why that is. I guess it could be the ways the local media is spinning things. People keep saying how the economy sucks in Rochester, and its not the best, but most people I know have found jobs in their field. It really all depends on your field. Health and education are listed as major employers, but that is misleading. Health is correct in being a large employer but education is not. U of R is listed as the largest employer but most of these jobs have nothing to do with education. Most are health related jobs that would exist without the college.
My advice would to see a potential place of residence for yourself.

The Rochester media has been overhyping the slide in the economy from 200-2005...there was a significant slide in those years, but the economy is making a noticeable turnaround as we speak. The employment figures for this past month are the best they have been in 15 months. The major problem the past few years has been the massive cutbacks at Kodak...which with all things considered, could have had a MUCH worse effect if it weren't for the smaller growing high-tech companies. The jobs added by these small and midized companies are now outpacing the losses at Kodak...which is an excellent thing for the Rochester economy. The less dependant the area is on Kodak, the better.
