Brighton does have more true mansions. The homes that are closer to the city like near Highland Park, and Monroe Ave are older. You have to make sure you find out what zone your in though, because there are some streets that are considered to be half within the Brighton School district and half out. Check Brighton out thoroughly though, It is a pretty large suburb and there are some fantastic homes there.
I am personally partial to the city (that is only because I grew up there) and there are some really great schools with incredible programs, but if I had to recommend a suburb it would be Brighton, hands down. Great school district, Beautiful homes, not too far from anything...
