Default Gates-Chili

Is it as bad as I've it is? I was talking to a girl from Spencerport that said that Gates-Chili was bad even 10-15 years ago. Is that true? I have a sister who lives in the district, by the airport and the neighborhood is nice, but are there areas where it isn't so nice?

The town of Gates is considered by many to be the "white-trashy" suburb. True or not, that is the reputation it has. Chili is considered a much "cleaner" town than Gates and has more newer/nicer housing stock. Neither of the towns has much real crime. Gates-Chili school district is pretty decent; the high school (Gates-Chili High) is actually ranked pretty well and is admitedly better than most of the Greece High Schools (the exception being Athena).

There are nice areas in each town, some just have more nice than others. Spencerport is a good place to live as are many of the "once removed" towns. By that I mean towns that do not directly border the city but rather border the suburb closest to the city. Ogden, Parma, Hilton, Brockport on the west and Ontario, Walworth, Macedon, Mendon to the east. Many I did not mention as well.

Spencerport would be a great affordable alternative to Gates-Chili.

I lived in Gates for 8 years. The pros are there's a ton of affordable housing and it's a close drive to everything. You can quickly get to highways, downtown, airport, shopping galore, whatever you want. The downside is the housing is older (if that matters to you) and it's close to highways, train tracks, and the airport so depending on the actual location you can get a lot of external noise bothering you. I also think the property/school taxes in Gates are proportionally higher than many of the other areas.

Gates was heavily Italian too, not sure if that is still so much the case. Many of the housing tracts in the town were built by Italian contractors and populated by immigrants that are good hard working people. Many of them are my friends and would make excellent neighbors. Particularly the area near Howard and Lyell Road which is well away from the airport yet has some great amenities.

Gates is DEFINITELY still a largely Italian town.

I used to visit my aunt and uncle in Chili when I was a child ... I used to have the best time there ... many many fond memories.

They used to live on ... I think it was called Brasser Drive ... if I am remembering correctly. I thought it was lovely there ... but I have not been there since the early 80's ... my aunt and uncle moved out of Chili around 83 or 84.

Gates is lovely! My parents still live there. It has great access to all shopping. They live off of Spencerport Road. Wegmans not too far. Shopping mall. Going to the right you can drive or walk to Elmgrove Road (I think I have the right road LOL) and there are some farms and quite lovely. The canal is near by too. They just built some new homes near by off of Spencerport Road. The other homes are a bit older but the people really take care of the neighborhood and the crime if any is very low.
